Ahead of World Heart Day 2024, Dr Robert Smith, consultant interventional cardiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, discusses innovative minimally invasive procedures to repair tricuspid valve regurgitation. Tricuspid valve regurgitation occurs when the tricuspid valve leaks, causing symptoms such as breathlessness, fatigue, and swelling of the ankles and legs. It’s thought to affect up to 5% of the population aged over 75. "At our hospitals there are two new types of low-risk non-surgical intervention available. The first is transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) where a clip is used to reduce the leak. The second is transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR), a newer procedure where the valve is replaced and the leak is obliterated," Dr Smith explains. If you are coming in for a cardiac stress test, there’s a lot to know! EKG stress tests will show how well your heart functions under pressure. On a treadmill or bike, you would be connected to an EKG while gradually gaining speed and incline/resistance. Results can show underlying coronary artery disease, arrhythmia, need for medications and more. A nurse practitioner from the U-M Health Frankel Cardiovascular Center shows you what to expect. #cardiology #HeartMonth #stresstest #EKG #GoBlue #stress #hearthealth #hearthealthy
