I’m sure the main points from Wes Streeting’s recent announcements about the health service being a driver for economic growth will be interpreted differently by different media outlets but I think he’s definitely onto something. Individual Placement Support (IPS) is an evidence based employment programme that’s been successfully integrated into many mental health care trusts up an down the country. Moving into employment brings many health and social benefits that are well documented. The economic benefits are also really positive. Research shows that patients receiving IPS support have reduced relapse and spend fewer days in hospital, reducing the burden on the NHS. (National Institute for Clinical Excellence). In Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) we have started to do our own research to see if patients are still in services after 6 months in work and the initial findings are really encouraging. Once an individual is in work, they are paying taxes, contributing to the economy and coming off benefits, again all massive drivers for economic growth. **Royal College of Physicians urges government to introduce new law amid rising damp, mould and leaks in social housing** The RCP has called on the government to accelerate a promised crackdown on landlords failing to fix tens of thousands of mouldy homes with a warning that unless laws are toughened many more people will die from the effects, reported the Guardian (10 Jan. 2024). Last year the government promised to introduce Awaab’s law setting tough deadlines for landlords to fix mouldy homes, after two-year-old Awaab Ishak died from prolonged exposure to black mould in his family’s Rochdale social housing flat. Since March 2023, the housing ombudsman for England made 721 findings of fault in how landlords tackled damp, mould and leaks, a significant increase since 2020-21. About 88,000 households in social housing are believed by the regulator to be living with serious damp and mould problems. The government has announced an eight-week consultation on proposals to require social landlords to manage this problem within set time limits, but it remains unclear when any new law would come into effect. The RCP asked “why haven’t we got it in place?… we know this is an ongoing problem. We know housing in this country is in a dreadful state.” #Guardian # Royal College of Physicians #RSH

If you are looking for one project that brings together all the pathologies of the Victorian Labor government together, I would say it is the opening of the medically supervised injecting room in North Richmond in 2018. A medically supervised injecting room is a place where people can inject drugs in a supervised health setting. The goal is to reduce deaths by overdose. No problem with that (so long as it reduces harm and prevents death, neither of which independent evidence says it has achieved so far). A core failing of the existing injecting rooms in North Richmond, a dense inner-city neighbourhood dominated by young families, is that the facility stands cheek-by-jowl with a primary school. In the hierarchy of competing needs, the safety of families and children needs to be properly balanced with that of people in need of such a facility when locating it, particularly during the trial phase when its impact is unknown. It is not appropriate to set up an injecting room next to a primary school. Yet, completely ignoring the residents of North Richmond, in 2020 the State Labor government announced it will look to open another facility in Melbourne CBD. It commissioned a report by former Victorian police commissioner Ken Lay to review the proposal. The review was submitted on 1 May 2023. To date the State Labor government has steadfastly refused to release it. By Labor logic, why should the public know what a report paid for by their taxes says about significant impending changes to their city and the impacted local communities? This week, following concerted effort by the Victorian Coalition, the Legislative Council passed a motion requiring the State Labor government to produce the report to Parliament by 6 March. Premier Jacinta Allan is still resisting and is refusing to say when the report will be released. Which only makes me wonder: How bad is this report for Labor that it is willing to upend democratic convention to keep it hidden? #northrichmond #injectingroom #auspol #addiction #drugsarebad #nodrugs

The opening paragraph of "Dare to Care: Representing care experienced young people says, "Care-experienced children are up to six times more likely to be criminalised than other children. 1 Just over half of re-experienced children will have a criminal conviction by the age of 24, compared to just over a tenth of their non-care-experienced peers of the same age. 2 Care-experienced children are over 10 times more likely to have received a custodial sentence than children who have not been in care. 3 In 2022, just 1% of children in England were in care, but 59% of children in custody in England and Wales were care experienced." We need to do better than this. Is it any wonder that these stats, accurate though they are, affect society's perception of how a care-experienced person might behave? Having to fight with one hand tied behind their back to be recognised as the unique individuals they are is very challenging. At Lancashire Careers Company CIC we see things very differently. In many ways the inheritance facing the next government is even more challenging than that in 1997. This analysis, from IPPR, suggests that even if the next government matched previous rates of improvement, it would take nearly ten years to recover levels of access in the NHS, up to seven years to return to previous performance on the education attainment gap and a decade to clear the courts backlog. To fix public services we must move beyond arguments about a smaller or larger state and instead focus on creating a 'smarter state'. The smarter state means delivering the three 'p’s of public service reform: prevention, personalisation and productivity. Prevention means intervening earlier, which can result in better outcomes and reduced costs; personalisation seeks to put strong relationships between citizens and staff in public services at the heart of delivering better outcomes; and productivity means using the resources of the state to deliver the best outcomes possible. In case you missed it...📰 A senior education advisor has won over £800,000 in compensation after she was made to reapply for her job while off work being treated for cancer. Mrs Healey had worked for Lancashire County Council as an early years specialist from 2012. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2014 and 2017 which led to lengthy periods of sickness absence while she underwent chemotherapy and surgeries. During Mrs Healey's sickness absence in 2018, the Council carried out an internal restructure of her department, and she was asked to apply for new leadership roles. According to an article from Metro, "she was put at a ‘significant disadvantage’ during a competitive interview process, lost the job to someone she managed for six years, and was then sacked for refusing to accept a post which was ‘clearly a demotion’." Following prolonged grievance and appeal processes, Mrs Healey turned down a 'suitable alternative' role, and was subsequently dismissed in 2021. Mrs Healey won claims of unfair dismissal, discrimination arising from disability and failure to make reasonable adjustments. The compensation payment consisted of a £14,688 basic award based on salary, a personal injury element of £45,000, an award for injury to feelings of £18,000, aggravated damages award of £12,000, loss of earnings until August 2032 of £333,572, and pension losses of £112,477. On Sept. 13, 2023, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas issued a decision finding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Final Rule unlawful and expanding the original July 16, 2021, injunction and order of vacatur to cover the Final Rule. However, the court maintained a partial stay of the order for “all DACA recipients who received their initial DACA status prior to July 16, 2021.” Accordingly, current grants of DACA and related Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) remain valid until they expire, unless individually terminated. However, USCIS will continue to accept and process DACA renewal requests and accompanying applications for employment authorization as it has since Oct. 31, 2022, in accordance with this decision.
