Great evening at the "Brands & Business: What do Young People Think?" event at the University of East Anglia. Having representation in the workplace across generations contributes to diversity of thought, helps businesses to see different perspectives and benefit from different life experiences. Understanding what motivates and engages people most significantly at different life stages is an important part of creating inclusive workplaces and retaining talent. Insightful to hear about some of the key values and priorities of young people entering employment, and to think about how employers can respond to generational trends and changes in meaningful ways.💡

𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲; 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐮𝐩 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐲.   This week I am featuring Angelie Rodriguez, People and Culture Business Partner at Metrie – an everyday Changemaker here on LinkedIn. Angelie immigrated to the US at 16 years old from Haiti and her experience of changing languages and culture has established her as a visionary HR leader by leveraging her background to create positive culture within her organization. Angelie has a strong work ethic that was recognized by her very first mentor and sponsor who shared her name in rooms leading to many invitations that allowed her to participate in different projects. In her HR role, Angelie meets employees from all walks of life – high schoolers to part time retirees. She can see from this diverse range of people that everyone is on a different journey and what motivates them to work is different. For example, she shared a story that occurred early in her career. Where a grandmother had to return to work because her daughter died tragically, and she needed to provide additional financial support for her granddaughter.   All our stories are different and connecting to them is key for Angelie. Through empathy, human connections, and flexibility. She has built an environment where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered. This is why one of her simplest approaches is to ask: What’s your story and how can I assist? Recognizing the of power of human connection in driving positive work culture. Angelie’s own experience as an immigrant is one of her strengths that allows to be adaptable and flexible in her role. She still gets question around her accent which she uses as a door to share her Caribbean roots. Connecting the dots through basic understanding allows better human connection. We talked about how understanding people’s barriers inside and outside of work can help us to find more connection points to their journey and to find ways to reduce the barriers along the way. We may not be able to solve every problem, but we can always find ways to smooth the journey so that employees can be their best at work. Angelie believes ‘culture is not a survey; it’s how you show up every day’.
