A recent study by KLAS Research and UPMC's Center for Connected Medicine says that better patient access is a key strategy goal for the health system leaders for 2023. In order to do this, the study points out that health systems need to focus on three important things: people, processes, and technology. 1. The people: Many health systems have leaders in charge of making sure that patients can get to their care. But having a boss who is in charge of patient access can be helpful. This leader plays a strategic role in figuring out how to deal with differences in the company, especially when it comes to government and technology. Getting patients involved and getting board approval for changes can be hard, especially in bigger groups, but it is important. 2. The process: Lack of standards in healthcare processes, like making appointments, storing data, and making payments, makes it hard for patients to get the care they need. For economies of scale to work, offices and hospitals must have the same ways of doing things. When using new technology, it is important to make sure that both patients and workers know how to use it. Often, vendors help come up with good ways to use new technology. 3. The technology: Health systems use important tools like patient interfaces, schedule alerts, and telemedicine to make it easier for people to get care. Patient portals have changed over time to give patients more ways to interact with their doctors, like sending messages and making appointments. Appointment reminders help patients show up for their appointments and give staff more time. Telehealth was started because of the outbreak, and it is still a useful tool, especially for mental health. As we move toward 2023, health systems should focus on these areas to make it easier for patients to get care, which will improve the entire experience of healthcare.
