Our recent Sustainable Healthcare survey of more than 1,000 Australians shows how crucial technology is to meeting community expectations about the healthcare sector’s sustainability practices. The results show while 60% of us want sustainable healthcare, only 50% think it's widely adopted. That said, it is encouraging 87% recognise technology’s role in promoting sustainability in healthcare. At Philips, we’re collaborating with healthcare sector leaders to speed up the adoption of sustainable practices to improve care for patients and the environment. 🌐 Strengthening Global Health Through Local Manufacturing: A Milestone IFC & WHO Partnership 🌐 We know that we need actionable steps that public and private stakeholders can take to build resilient health systems in developing countries. But what are these? That’s what we address in the Chairs’ Summary from our latest collaborative effort with the World Health Organization (WHO) during The World Bank Group’s Spring Meetings 2024. In a series of co-hosted roundtables over the past 9 months, we identified a number of strategies to enhance local manufacturing capacities, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and mobilize necessary investments. The goal is to ensure that health systems are equipped to handle current needs, and also prepared for future challenges. The collaboration between IFC and WHO is pivotal. By combining our strengths, we are better positioned to implement sustainable health solutions that can withstand the tests of crises and pandemics. This partnership underscores our commitment to a proactive approach in healthcare, emphasizing the importance of resilience and adaptability across global health systems. 🔗 Read the full Chairs’ Summary here: https://lnkd.in/ey8ihThZ IFC - International Finance Corporation #health #pandemicpreparedness #globalhealth

🌍 Green Healthcare: Are We Asking the Right Questions? During our latest webinar, OHE brings together insights from global leaders in government, healthcare, and academia to address the challenges of climate change. This discussion highlights the key areas that need urgent attention: Key gaps in understanding: 🟢The mental health effects of climate disasters and environmental stress are still underexplored. 🟢Healthcare workers are often constrained by systemic limitations, lacking the time or resources to make sustainable decisions. 🟢There’s a need for data that links healthcare interventions with environmental factors to monitor vulnerabilities. Reforms required: 🟢The social and economic costs of inaction must be clearer, like the 4.2 million lives lost annually due to ambient pollution. 🟢Strong leadership and policies that prioritise equity are important to engaging communities and ensuring sustainable healthcare. Building a culture of sustainability: 🟢Countries with successful trials, such as Singapore's healthcare access improvements, should share best practices. 🟢Collaboration between industries, governments, and communities is necessary for sustainable transformation. Speakers: Weiyang Cheong, Tsvetelina Müller, Hazel Walsh, Grace Hampson and chaired by Charlotte Ashton Find out more from Anjeli Sharma here: https://lnkd.in/d24feWHx #greenhealthcare #sustainablehealth #mentalhealth #climatechange #sustainablehealthcare #healthcareinnovation #healthequity #publichealth #sustainabilityinhealthcare #globalhealth #healthdata #climatecrisis

🌍 Professor Alistair McGuire addressed the Sustainability in Health Summit at UK House of Lords. Professor Alistair McGuire recently addressed the #Sustainability in #Health Summit at the House of Lords, hosted by Policy Connect. The event brought together healthcare leaders, parliamentarians, and policymakers to discuss how we can embed sustainability into healthcare without compromising quality. Professor McGuire highlighted the urgent need to reduce healthcare's carbon footprint—4.4% of global emissions—through better resource management and innovative strategies. He presented findings from the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (#PHSSR), focusing on: 🌱 Reducing avoidable hospitalisations 🌍 Mapping healthcare's carbon footprint 🤝 Collaborating with suppliers to cut waste 🎓 Investing in workforce education He also discussed the NHS's ambitious net-zero targets and the challenges in meeting them, emphasising the importance of cutting low-value care and shifting focus from hospitals to community-based care. The summit, chaired by Baroness Margaret Ritchie, provided a timely platform for shaping the future of sustainable #healthcare in the #UK. Other key speakers included Dr Karen Mayor and Heidi Barnard, who shared insights on integrating sustainability into healthcare operations. Together, we can build a #resilient, #sustainable health system for future generations. 🔗Learn more➡️ https://lnkd.in/eitvPVMT #NHS #HealthSystem #CarbonFootprint #HealthWorkforce

Some considerations on the sustainability of health systems: The environmental impact of the healthcare sector is often overlooked, as it faces numerous other challenges simultaneously. For instance, Switzerland's healthcare sector contributes 6.7% of the country's overall CO2 emissions. In order to lower emissions and meet the climate goals set in Paris in 2015, sustainable solutions are necessary in this area. This is crucial not only from an environmental standpoint, but also because climate change and its consequences are already affecting the health of many individuals (e.g. extreme heat leading to increased mortality). However, the question remains: how can transformation be achieved in a healthcare system that is already under pressure? And how can commitment to sustainability be promoted and ensured in institutions, healthcare facilities, and communities? While health systems play a significant role in working towards more sustainable societies, a multi-faceted approach and close interaction with policy makers are essential to develop effective measures for both healthier societies and environments. #HealthSciences #Health #Sustainability

Managing healthcare facilities and operations in the face of a changing climate is becoming increasingly more challenging. Climate change will significantly exacerbate a range of health-related concerns in our communities. It is, therefore, essential that our healthcare facilities and infrastructure are optimised in order to respond to those challenges. Experience has shown that embedding sustainability in healthcare leads to positive environmental and health outcomes in addition to operational savings. The info-graphic below hits some of the CLINICAL high notes for embedding sustainability in healthcare facilities (source GBCA):
