This is powerful.
"The heart of this issue is whether we think people who don't live in single family homes deserve to live in our town." Last week, North Andover approved its zoning bylaw amendment intended for MBTA Communities compliance. The Town's Planning Board and planning department staff - Andrew Shapiro, AICP, Jean Enright, and Zach Melcher - deserve plenty of credit for the work they put into getting this proposal to Town Meeting and across the finish line. It was a significant effort involving over 15 public meetings. Despite all the work planning departments can do, we know that at Town Meeting it is ultimately up to the residents. We had no idea what the result would be. With all the negative press around MBTA communities and the naysayers getting all the attention, I wanted to share this clip from Town Meeting. This resident spoke more eloquently and concisely on the issue than I ever have in the year+ of working on 3A implementation. To hear so many positive voices at this meeting left me hopeful and optimistic. MBTA Communities alone will not solve our housing crisis, but its implementation has made clear there are many, many residents who support more housing options in their community.

The second course in this series focuses entirely on how to be more inclusive using the community solutions-based approach, applying each phase of the community solutions-based approach to an example from Baltimore to show how projects can be more inclusive and, ultimately, why the outcome will always be better when involving the community at every step of the way. https://lnkd.in/gPVNWv5h

Senior Management Analyst, Housing and Homelessness Data and Research Coordinator at Mecklenburg County
On March 8th, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released the updated, web-based, Equal Access Assessment Tool (EAAT). The EAAT can play a crucial role in promoting accountability, identifying areas for improvement, and supporting organizations in their efforts to provide inclusive and equitable services to individuals accessing shelter and services in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. This blog provides an overview of the tool, what it assesses, and why it’s important. While mandated for specific HUD funded programs, the EAAT can be used by all organizations providing shelter and services to assess whether their practices and procedures align with legal requirements and best practices for providing equal access to shelter and services. The assessment is an important first step in assessing strengths, identifying opportunities for improvement, and developing action steps to ensure the provision of inclusive and equitable services in Mecklenburg County.
