Health star labels move closer to being mandatory. But food companies could still (legally) game the system. Australian and New Zealand food ministers at state, federal and national levels met to thrash out what’s next for health star ratings on packaged foods. Now, after the food industry made slow progress in meeting the target to roll out health stars to more products voluntarily, ministers are tightening the screws. In a significant step, they’ve just set in train a process to make health stars mandatory. Here’s what this could mean for consumers, and what else we’d like to see. In early June 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) published new guidelines aimed at creating food environments that enable healthy dietary decisions. These guidelines include fiscal policies designed to discourage the consumption of unhealthy foods and promote healthier options through subsidies and other supports. This dual approach of taxing unhealthy foods and subsidizing healthy ones can significantly influence consumer behavior, making healthier choices more convenient and appealing. The overall objectives are to: 👉 Provide evidence-based recommendations and implementation considerations on taxing foods that do not contribute to a healthy diet, particularly Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs). 👉Propose subsidies for foods that promote a healthy diet, with a focus on lowering the prices of these targeted foods and beverages at the retail level to change consumer behavior. 👉Enable evidence-informed advocacy to advance policy actions aimed at promoting healthier diets. 👉Guide future research and contribute to the creation of food environments that support healthy dietary practices among both children and adults. While the guidelines provides a robust framework for fiscal measures, it is not an implementation manual. It does not detail how countries can implement and monitor these policies but rather recommends the measures to take. However, there are strong recommendations to 💡 Tax SSBs 💡Tax Unhealthy Foods 💡Subsidize Healthy Foods If implemented, the WHO's new guidelines will reinforce healthier eating throughout the globe. By adopting these recommendations, countries can create environments that make the healthier choice the easier choice and can lead to significant positive shifts in consumer behavior, ultimately reducing the prevalence of NCDs fostering a healthier global population. As we navigate the complexities of our current food environment, it's crucial to support and advocate for policies that promote healthier dietary choices. Let's work together to make healthy eating a reality for all! link to guidelines here: https://lnkd.in/gzxHQCMa Post by Nishita Panwar #HealthyEating #PublicHealth #Nutrition #FoodPolicy #WHO #HealthyDiet #NutritionGuidelines #FoodEnvironment #DietaryGuidelines #SSB #SDG2 #HealthPromotion #SustainableDiet

I support food service and food retail businesses to improve food safety standards and achieve food safety business excellence.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) conducted its first Consumer Insights Tracker (CIT) survey (2023) and released the results this afternoon. Key findings from the Consumer Insights Tracker (CIT) survey conducted by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) include: Nutrition as a Priority: Nearly three-quarters of consumers surveyed put effort into maintaining a healthy diet, indicating a strong focus on nutrition over naturalness, convenience, and country of origin. Trust in Food Safety: 72% expressed confidence in the safety of the food supply, with farmers and food producers emerging as the most trusted sector in the food system (83% trust). This emphasises the importance of maintaining high standards of food safety across the supply chain. Labelling Preferences: While mandatory back-of-pack food labelling, such as the nutrition information panel and ingredients list, enjoys a relatively high level of trust (70%), there is less confidence in voluntary front-of-pack labelling regarding health benefits (40% trust). This suggests a need for clearer and more consistent labelling practices to help consumers make informed dietary choices. Food Safety Concerns: The survey identified foodborne illness as the primary food safety concern for 59% of consumers. This highlights the importance of ongoing efforts to prevent and mitigate foodborne diseases through effective regulation and education. #FoodSafety #Nutrition #ConsumerInsights

Empowering Consumers with Informed Food Choices: Proposed Amendment to FSSAI Act Body: In the era of digital transformation, it is imperative to leverage technology to enhance consumer awareness and empower them with informed food choices. To this end, I propose an amendment to the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSSAI Act) that mandates food businesses to disclose key nutritional information on LinkedIn. Rationale: * LinkedIn is a professional networking platform with a vast reach among food industry professionals, consumers, and stakeholders. * By requiring food businesses to share nutritional information on LinkedIn, we can: * Increase transparency and accountability in the food industry. * Provide consumers with easy access to reliable and up-to-date information about the food they consume. * Empower consumers to make healthier and more informed food choices. * Promote healthy eating habits and reduce the incidence of diet-related diseases. Proposed Amendment: Section 29 of the FSSAI Act shall be amended to include the following provision: "(4) Every food business shall disclose the following nutritional information on its LinkedIn page: (a) Energy value (b) Total fat (c) Saturated fat (d) Trans fat (e) Carbohydrates (f) Sugar (g) Protein (h) Sodium (i) Any other nutritional information as may be prescribed by the Food Authority." Implementation: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) shall develop guidelines for the implementation of this amendment, including: · The format and frequency of nutritional information disclosure. · Mechanisms for verifying the accuracy of the information provided. · Enforcement measures for non-compliance. Conclusion: By providing transparent and accessible nutritional information, we can promote healthier eating habits, reduce diet-related diseases, and foster a more informed and engaged food system. Great to see Tesco work on reformulation highlighted today. When you think of reformulation you might think of #HFSS and reducing salt and sugar in food products. But Tesco has also been working to get more veg and fibre into their meals and products so that what customers are already buying becomes better for them too. 🍠🍆🍅Less than 1/3 adults eat 5 a day - common barriers are taste and family preference 🍝🥕Veg-rich lasagnas and Bologneses win in taste tests - meaning customers prefer these than the 'original' formulations 🍄✅Putting mushrooms in sauces delivers richer, silkier texture and sweeter taste without the need for added sugar 🍕🥖Pizza and garlic bread are being reformulated too - more wholegrains, simpler tomato sauce, and more fibre Oonagh Turnbull Karen Poole Sue Couter Laura Farrell RNutr. #health #foodretail #nutrition #healthydiets #reformulation #foodpolicy

"Food reformulation is the process of altering the processing or composition of a food or beverage product, to improve its nutritional profile or to reduce its content of ingredients or nutrients of concern. Food reformulation can contribute to ensuring access to safe and nutritious food for all, and a shift towards healthier and sustainable consumption patterns." (WHO, 2022) The ASEAN Food and Beverage Alliance (AFBA) strongly supports a comprehensive multi-pronged approach, encompassing reformulation, to achieve regional public health goals. To aid businesses of all size, AFBA has developed a guidebook on reformulation, which provides a comprehensive overview of the specific steps, processes and challenges involved in product innovation and reformulation, alongside industry case studies and best practices. By collectively embracing, as well as supporting, food reformulation and innovation we can pave the way for a healthier and more resilient food system that benefits us all. #Reformulation #Guidebook #FoodInnovation #Nutrition #Bestpractices #Health #Sustainable
