Legionellosis: A Diagnosis That Continues to Save Lives It was 48 years ago that Legionnaires' disease was first identified. During an American Legion convention in Philadelphia in July 1976, 221 delegates fell ill and 34 sadly lost their lives. The cause was later traced to Legionella pneumophila bacteria in the hotel's air conditioning system. What exactly are Legionella, how do they thrive and why are they so dangerous? Legionella are ubiquitous bacteria - they are always present and thrive under certain conditions such as stagnant water and temperatures between 25 and 45 degrees Celsius. They become dangerous when inhaled through fine water droplets (aerosols) from activities such as showering or from air conditioning systems. These bacteria can cause severe pneumonia, especially in people with weakened immune systems. A recent report from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) highlights a significant increase in cases: 10,723 cases of Legionnaires' disease were reported in Europe in 2021, with the actual number likely to be much higher. Legionella is a serious but often overlooked health risk. Preventing stagnation in water systems, maintaining appropriate temperatures and regularly cleaning and maintaining aerosol generating equipment are essential measures. 🤝 #Viega #DrinkingWater #Health
