"This year, we continue to focus on the connection between civic participation and health, called civic health. Evidence shows that participating in our communities, whether through volunteering or joining neighborhood groups, strengthens our social connections and sense of belonging which in turn, benefits our physical and mental health. Civic participation in political or electoral processes through voting or organizing can also influence policies that create opportunities for health, including safe spaces to live and work and funding for public health initiatives. This report highlights the importance of civic infrastructure, spaces to connect and be informed, with a focus on access to local news, broadband internet and public libraries."

Health is more than just medical care. Last week, we published and began the first stages of the Convergence Collaborative on Social Factors of Health Blueprint for Action release! The Collaborative met for several months to come to a consensus on solutions for creating the best policy environment for local efforts and partnerships to improve household and community health by addressing social factors of health (also known as social determinants of health or SDOH). These convenings were supported with generous financial support by CommonSpirit Health, the Episcopal Health Foundation, and Kaiser Permanente. Their commitment to the Convergence process of building consensus among people and organizations with different views and priorities made the project possible. #SDOH #SocialFactorsOfHealth #SocialDriversofHealth #SocialDeterminantsofHealth

Our health is shaped by the world around us 🌏 A secure job, a decent home, and freedom from poverty and discrimination are all building blocks that stack together to lead to an increased chance of living longer. When people see how jobs, homes, hardship and discrimination link to health, they are more likely to support, and demand, the policies and actions needed to start addressing these issues. So let's communicate about these wider determinants of health in ways that build understanding. Here is our recommendation, based on a 4-year research project testing the most effective ways to communicate about health: 💡 Use the ‘building blocks’ metaphor 💡 To explain the role of the wider determinants of health, we can compare building a healthy society with the process of constructing a sturdy building. A thriving community needs all the right building blocks in place: jobs, pay, housing, education. We can then explain health inequalities by talking about building blocks that are missing, or weak, and need replacing. Check out the full toolkit for more info, as well as examples of how to use this metaphor in practice: https://lnkd.in/eFtkvUVc
