Andy Bell dissects data from the NHS Benchmarking Network's most recent results on mental health care in the UK in 2023. The findings for 2023 show how mental health services are operating at a rapid pace to keep up with the growing demand for mental health support and depicts how these services are developing and adapting to meet unprecedented levels of need. However, there is a genuine risk that these services may fail to keep up with demand unless funding is increased to allow them to develop and evolve. With the right amount of funding, we can ensure the progress gained since the Mental Health Implementation Plan is maintained and access, quality, and equity improve rather than deteriorate. Lord Darzi’s independent review of the state of the NHS sets out clearly why we must invest in the nation’s mental health. The report makes the case for long-term change to the way our national health service works, as well as urgent action to turn around the nation’s deteriorating mental health. The report says that ‘it is our mental health that appears to have deteriorated most significantly in the past decade’ and that this has led to rising referrals to services that cannot keep up with demand. The European Parliament has approved its first report on #mentalhealth, marking a significant step in addressing the growing mental health challenges across the EU. The report emphasizes the importance of collecting data, developing effective policies, and addressing the #stigma associated with mental health. It also focuses on three guiding principles: access to #prevention, high-quality and affordable #healthcare, and reintegration into society post recovery. The EU's commitment to mental health is aimed at complementing Member States' policies and supporting real action on the ground. This initiative is a crucial step towards promoting good mental health and well-being across the #EU. As a mental health advocate, I applaud Sara Cerdas for this significant progress and look forward to the positive impact it will have on the lives of millions of EU citizens. #MentalHealthMatters #mentalhealthadvocacy

Counselling Psychologist| Rural Clinician |Board Approved Supervisor|Lecturer|AuDHD| ND mentor, coach, consultant
As a rural psychologist for 21 years, I can absolutely attest to how difficult it is. Of roughly 37k psychologists, only 7k of us work regionally and rurally. Incentives would be a great start, but retention is also a challenge. We need to look holistically at the challenges, including the higher likelihood of burnout for rural psychs. We also need to do so much more to support rural psychs, as we often work constantly at the top of our scope of practice, whilst being more isolated in our work, either because we work in solo practice, or in multidisciplinary teams where there are no other psychologists. Working rurally is an absolute gift, and I would not want to work anywhere else, but the unique challenges of rural practice are often overlooked, and how to scaffold and support rural clinicians must be considered as part of a very important process of recruitment and retention.
President @ Australian Psychological Society (APS) | Adjunct Professor @ Curtin University | Clinical and Counselling Psychologist
Australian Psychological Society president Catriona Davis-McCabe said the cost of professional help was prohibitive for too many people. "People are having to use a credit card instead of a Medicare card to pay to support their mental health, and it's just not acceptable," she said. Dr Davis-McCabe called for specific rural Medicare loadings for psychologists working in rural areas, much like GPs can access, as well as incentives to move out of the cities, much like doctors can access. But even if more funding was made available, she said there were not enough psychologists in Australia, and the federal government urgently needed to create more training spaces for them. https://lnkd.in/g4bMVcA7

The Mental Health Act featured as one of the government's priorities in today's King's Speech 🧠 The monarch says that his government will focus on improving the "mental health provision for young people", as well as "ensure mental health is given the same attention and focus as physical health". The government will also legislate to modernise the Mental Health Act "so it is fit for the 21st Century", which is welcome news for the many mental health care providers, including HealthHero, who have called for this much-needed review.
