The NHS Race & Health Observatory has released a new report on improving access to #NHS services for Jewish communities, highlighting strategies to better engage with and support Jewish patients, ensuring their needs are met within the healthcare system. 📃 Link to the full report here: bit.ly/NHSRHO We’re delighted that one of our PENNA 2024 winning projects focused on engaging with the Jewish community to improve healthcare access. Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust took home the #PENNA24 award for 'Communicating Effectively with Patients and Families' for their incredible work in tackling health inequalities through co-design in their school-aged immunisation programme. 🤝 By collaborating closely with the Jewish community, including the local rabbi, they achieved a remarkable 91% HPV consent uptake at one of the Jewish high schools. This initiative also resulted in a significant reduction in “was not brought” rates, improving overall engagement. The power of co-design was key, ensuring the community was involved at every step, from leaflet creation to outcome-focused planning. #NHS #HealthEquity #JewishCommunities #PENNA2024 #NorthumbriaHealthcare #Immunisation #HealthInclusion #NHSRHO NHS Race & Health Observatory Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Here is an excerpt from the Executive Summary of some of the issues that were found: "The recognition and understanding of Jewish identity- There is a systemic lack of knowledge (and sometimes conflation) about what it means to be Jewish and Judaism, and how this impacts communication and care across the NHS network. Miscommunications and stereotypes stemming from this lack of understanding can lead to disengagement, and a greater reliance from the community on community-led support services. Poor and inconsistent data capture within NHS systems-The inconsistency in the ability to identify oneself as ethnically Jewish, or one’s religion as Judaism, leads to feelings of otherness and lack of prioritisation as a minoritised group. Assumptions about homogeneity create barriers in identifying appropriate access to services - The inability to identify, appropriately support and measure outcomes for the Jewish community can lead NHS systems to ineffectively allocate resources appropriately to address inequities for their patients, and lead to staff not being able to provide personalised care. Mistrust and feeling unsafe are key barriers to improving self-identification practices- In periods of heightened antisemitism, and for older generations who may have experienced past trauma, there is a hesitancy to self-report as Jewish, as a religion or ethnicity. Pervasive stereotypes exist and are amplified by medical education and the media- Low levels of religious and cultural literacy amongst NHS staff, which can be perpetuated by the media and inadequate education, leads to pervasive stereotypes and assumptions about the Jewish community." I'm really happy to see such research being done. As someone coming from the US, and New York/New Jersey specifically, it has been surprising to me the lack of knowledge and understanding of basic ideas of Judaism that I see or hear about within many sectors here, especially in Healthcare (and even in London, and even in North West London). That there is not even knowledge of major Jewish holidays and what that might mean, of ways that one might practice keeping the Sabbath, or what it means to keep Kosher. It also discusses the rise in antisemitism since October 7th in healthcare - both for healthcare workers and also for patients. We need to talk about how this impacts healthcare (who is not willing to go for fear of mistreatment or worse), which then has a larger impact of public health and wellbeing. So much more can be done when there is understanding about a group/culture, especially in the understanding that it is not a monolith. But the main thing that can be done is to talk and learn. As for a bit of #SelfPromotion - if you want to step away from stereotypes and to learn more about the Jewish community, regarding healthcare or otherwise - please feel free to reach out. I have a lot of experience speaking and running sessions on this topic.

📌 🏥 As Healthcare Professionals, do you know the difference between health equality and health equity? 🤔 We should! As we strive towards improving healthcare outcomes, it's crucial to understand the distinction between health equality and health equity. Health Equality ensures everyone gets the same resources or opportunities, regardless of their circumstances. It's about treating everyone equally. Health Equity, on the other hand, recognizes that each person has unique needs and circumstances. It aims to provide resources and opportunities to those who need them most, addressing disparities and ensuring everyone has a fair chance at good health. Let's discuss: - How do you perceive the difference between health equality and health equity in your practice? - What strategies have you implemented to promote health equity among your patients or community? - In what ways can we collectively work towards achieving health equity in our healthcare systems? I look forward to hearing your perspectives and experiences on this topic! https://lnkd.in/grfCNa2u #HealthEquality #HealthEquity #HealthcareImprovement #PublicHealth #HealthcareProfessionals
