Ahead of the World Health Assembly next week, where global health leaders will convene to discuss current and future public health priorities, we are taking stock of our incredible 8-year journey. 🌍
In the last 8 years, it has been a long, exciting, and rewarding journey with amazing results. Since inception, FAH has supported 22 governments across 16 countries, mobilizing millions of dollars in resources for community health strengthening and institutionalization. This has seen 450,000 community health workers recognized and actively in practice. 🙌
The theme of this year’s Health Assembly is: "All for Health, Health for All." We are just getting started. Partner with us, so we can continue to scale and strengthen health systems, contributing to advancing the universal health coverage agenda. Together, we can achieve more! 💪 #WHA2024#GlobalHealth#CommunityHealth#UHC

"This year, we continue to focus on the connection between civic participation and health, called civic health. Evidence shows that participating in our communities, whether through volunteering or joining neighborhood groups, strengthens our social connections and sense of belonging which in turn, benefits our physical and mental health. Civic participation in political or electoral processes through voting or organizing can also influence policies that create opportunities for health, including safe spaces to live and work and funding for public health initiatives.
This report highlights the importance of civic infrastructure, spaces to connect and be informed, with a focus on access to local news, broadband internet and public libraries."

Although World Health Day was officially celebrated yesterday on April 7th, the significance of prioritizing global health resonates every day. As we reflect on the theme of "Building a Fairer, Healthier World," let's renew our commitment to addressing health inequalities and ensuring equitable access to healthcare for all. By advocating for policies that promote universal health coverage, supporting marginalized communities, and investing in public health initiatives, we can work towards creating a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
While the designated day has passed, our dedication to global health remains steadfast. Let's use this moment to amplify our efforts in advocating for health equity, spreading awareness about pressing health issues, and taking action to create positive change in our communities and beyond. Claiming Our Right to Health
World Health Day's theme, "My Health, My Right," highlights the universal right to health
for all individuals. It emphasizes that good health is not just a privilege but a fundamental
right, encompassing physical, mental, and social well-being.
This year's theme underscores the importance of health equity, advocating for accessible,
affordable, and inclusive healthcare systems worldwide. Empowerment through education
and technology plays a crucial role in this journey toward health literacy and stronger
communities.
As we celebrate, we're reminded to advocate for policies supporting public health, educate
others on healthy living, and empower individuals to take charge of their well-being, as well
as urging us to ensure that health becomes a reality for everyone, everywhere.

Thanks to Health Services Daily , Michelle O'Brien, for an amazingly frank and thoughtful Wild Health Summit. Provided lots of food for thought.
Putting on my Primary Care / PHN hat on, it would be great to include primary care in future summits (particularly coal face clinicians).
The impressive Harry Iles-Mann provided incredible points which I agree needs addressing:
1. We shouldn't only focus on acute digital services, when preventing the need for these acute services in the first place would be ideal.
Primary care is still widely misunderstood by tertiary care. For example, whilst Virtual EDs are incredibly useful, there's no denying they're pulling both patients and workforce out of primary care, despite claims otherwise.
Reports of patients not attending GPs but attending Virtual EDs due to cost have to be understood in the context that GP salaries in these Virtual EDs are better than what many GPs earn in private practice (even for mixed billing practices), whilst seeing less patients per hour (acknowledging higher acuity), having paid training and non-clinical time, super, leave and other CME and penalty rate benefits.
The point is not to pay hospital clinicians less, but to consider whether if community care were funded better we would have less of a primary care access and workforce crisis. Perhaps we wouldn't have as much of an ED and ambulance crisis as well.
2. We need to avoid a "hurricane of doors" first and foremost, before we talk about enabling a single digital front door. Whilst streaming consumers to the right care is absolutely needed, we also need to work on reducing the number of streams and choices for an unwell consumer.
At one point in Victoria, a patient had to decide whether to access:
a.GP
b. Nurse on call
c. GPRC
d. PPCC,
e. UCC
f. VVED,
g. Locum After hours services
h. Ambulance
I. Physical ED
j. After hours GP line
With so many options, not only do consumers/ patients get confused, we also cause fragmentation of care.
Whilst the mooted "Sharing by default" changes will help, continuity of care will still suffer. As elucidated by NSW Lumos data, primary care investment directly results in a financial return to the hospital system through reduced ED utilization. This doesn't even include longer term Quadruple Aim benefits to patients, providers and the health system.

From my PHN lens, primary care is slipping into crisis. If we don't act now as a nation to promote and preserve quality primary care, through investment in and conversations with its frontline clinicians, we will have a broader health system in crisis within the next decade.
I've seen personally what a lack of primary care and generalist care can do to medical outcomes in overseas settings. I really hope we can act now so we preserve our quality primary care system.
