"Number one is public schools need to be equitably funded. Number two is a justice-centered approach that meets students where they're at. Then we'll start to see this public good really become something that's a launching pad for young people." James Ford of NC based HEAL Partner CREED (Center for Racial Equity in Education) / HEAL Together NC. What do strong public schools mean to you? In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re shining the spotlight on some of our inspiring grantees! This week's organization is the Social Justice Learning Institute (SJLI), dedicated to improving the education, health, and well being of youth and communities of color by empowering them to enact social change through research, training, and community mobilization. SJLI operates three core programs to better serve the whole community: • Empowering Through Education – Using education as a tool to empower communities of color to unlock their ability to change their lives and the world around them. Programs include Urban Scholars, which aims to support youth of color in increasing academic achievement, graduating from high school, and transitioning to college. • Creating Thriving Communities – Working to transform neighborhood conditions by improving the built environment and expanding access to resources that enable residents to be healthy and thrive. SJLI's Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) nutritional education program provides community members with opportunities to expand their knowledge, understanding, and access to healthy living activities. • Changing Systems – Building capacity for community members to identify and rectify injustice and to advocate for policies that address their needs. SJLI's Youth Justice Fellowship (YJF) delves into systemic issues impacting education, economics, youth development, community empowerment, health, environment, criminal legal system, and policy. Learn more about SJLI and how you can support them today at sjli.org.

Investing in Connecticut Children’s Future: A Successful Literacy Roundtable! I’m thrilled to share that last week, Rep. Robin Comey and Rep. Dominique E. Johnson co-hosted a Literacy Roundtable focused on the importance of early literacy programs. Our very own Alexander Chu from Reach Out and Read, Northeast was one of many passionate literacy advocates who participated in the roundtable discussion. Connecticut made a significant commitment in the 2023 budget by allocating $1 million for statewide investments in evidence-based early literacy curricula and teaching practices. Research overwhelmingly shows this approach has a lasting impact: 📘 Improved school achievement 📘 Enhanced emotional and social well-being for children 📘 Reduced grade retentions 📘 Lower rates of juvenile delinquency Investing in early literacy programs is an investment in our children’s future. Let’s keep this momentum going! If you’d like to learn more about the discussion, you can watch the entire event on CT-N: https://lnkd.in/eNHCqFRi #Literacy #EarlyChildhoodEducation #Community #Connecticut #ReachOutandRead #RORNE

It is important to learn about social justice, education, and technology because it allows us to considerately engage with the world, advocate for change, and navigate through the challenges of society. In the future I plan on integrating these concepts into my teaching through the use of technology, collaborative projects, critical pedagogy, and inclusivity. #edlt3110_sp24_m71_r7

Preschool teachers are more likely to look for signs of challenging behavior in young Black children—especially young Black boys than young white boys (Gilliam et al., 2016). This sobering statistic underscores the critical work we do at the Midwest & Plains Equity Assistance Center (MAP). Our mission of “Equitable, Responsive Education for All” propels us to address these disparities head-on. We guide our partners through the development of critical consciousness which empowers educators to examine their own implicit biases. As advocates for change, our dedicated team at MAP works diligently to provide technical assistance and training, promoting equity and reform. Together, we challenge biases and contribute to a more just educational landscape. Join us in our mission as we strive to eliminate disparities and create a nurturing space for every child to thrive. Let's work towards a future where every child is seen, heard, and given equal opportunities. #EquitableEducation #CriticalConsciousness #ImplicitBias #EducationReform #EquityInEducation #DiversityInEducation #InclusiveClassrooms #AntiBiasEducation #EducationAdvocacy #EqualOpportunities
