@DrMishMash- Are non-surgeons performing surgeries up and down UK? I have spoken since my first post to nurse practitioners who have shared they know colleagues who perform appendicectomies, cholecystectomies and mastectomies and others. This is worrying and apart from patient safety, accountability and training opportunities for surgeons, nursing colleagues inform me this places some under added pressure given this is well beyond their remit and license. Do patients know about this before consenting? 😱 Avoiding a major emergency... ➡️One of the most nerve wracking ordered in the NICU, in my opinion, is an MRI. 🧲 There can be absolutely NO metal on or inside of the baby! 📷 Picture this: the baby is covered in wires that monitor their heart rate & breathing, has multiple infusing IV lines, maybe has a drain of some kind, has a past surgical history, and a tracheostomy tube in their airway. 👉🏽You are the nurse bringing them to their test that day. You are responsible to ensure that nothing attached or inside of the baby has metal (there are certain internal cardiac 'clips' that are not MRI compatible). ⭐ The most effective way to ensure this is to make sure that the family is asked about any possible implanted devices, ensuring that all of your equipment is metal free (use your resources, never, ever guess) and all of this is brought up multiple times, including the moment right before the patient goes into the MRI room. 📢 SPEAK UP, it saves lives. 🫁 Check out the image below of the tracheostomy tube. Some of them are not MRI compatible, and have to be changed to a metal-free alternative before the patient goes for their test. 🧲 And after all of this, don't forget to remove any metal you have on your body, nurses!
