Many popular forms of marketing, such as testimonials, case studies, and customer reviews, all rely on the principle of social proof. Social proof reflects the idea that people innately trust the opinions of their peers. And this trust runs deep—according to a professor of psychology at Knox College, sharing opinions with one’s peers has been so beneficial in dispensing valuable information within a community that it is considered an evolutionary behaviour. I might get roasted for this one. I attended an awesome marketing event this week. Spryng, hosted by Wynter, broke the B2B Event playbook. There were A LOT of smart marketers and a lot of awesome, tactical advice. And one very concerning trend. LinkedIn's rise reminds me of the rise of gated content. It's becoming such a game that we lose sight of the content and the connection. All we think about is the conversion. Advice was given on: - how to game the algorithm - who can write content on your behalf - how someone can use your profile for automated outreach - how to login into executives' profiles to write for "them" Presenters introduced and defined themselves with follower counts and engagement rates. Now, there was some good advice in there, but the whole ghostwriting and gaming of this platform is not for me. Instead, I'm going to consistently share helpful anecdotes, great content, and real data from our platform. If that doesn't work, I'll try something else. But it will be me. Novel concept, I know. About 4 months ago, I was on a call with my friend Chris, when he told me about an odd business problem. He said: "We have enough followers on social media, driving them to our sales page, but we're not getting many buyers. Maybe we need to invest more in paid ads..." That's a bad approach. But not for the reason you might think. It is bad because money doesn't solve problems. And from his testimonials, it seems Chris's product is awesome. The problem? His marketing strategy was absolutely terrible. So, we spent a few weeks making it better....and guess what happened? Chris saw a 20% increase in revenue. And more customers got the product they needed. Win/Win. Well, a marketing strategy can make or break the success of an otherwise good tech product. So let’s dive into the process I used to fix Chris's strategy: 1. Collected data for a month to understand what is working, and what isn’t. 2. Formed 4 hypotheses about what could use improvement. - Wrong target - Wrong messaging - Complicated customer journey - Not the right features 3. Asked existing customers what they did/didn't like about the product. Wrote down our insight in a file. 4. Executed our hypothesis one at a time, and measured the results. A 20% increase in revenue is a good start. Now Chris can double down the results with paid ads. I'm still learning daily, and I certainly don't know everything, but I can give you my perspective on any questions you have about B2C marketing strategy. Drop them below. P.S. This is an example of why "good" marketing can't save you. This outreach technique works. I haven't used Paypal in close to a decade, but they still have access to my inbox. Also, sending me money is a fun attention-getter and obviously a negligible cost. Kudos for figuring out a way to reach me. Unfortunately for Sal here, despite a marketing tactic that gets them exposure, they wasted it on a completely undifferentiated pitch. They're self-aware enough to know the noise I'm getting in my LinkedIn inbox, but they found a new channel and are spamming me with the same crap. If you're trying to market your product or service, here's the takeaway: a great marketing strategy starts with your offer. It doesn't matter if you can get my attention, it matters whether you can effectively turn that attention into dollars. Distribution doesn't solve your differentiation problem. That's my two cents.
