Despite progress in diversity and inclusion efforts, Black women remain significantly underrepresented in healthcare leadership roles. Women of color hold only about 5% of C-suite roles in healthcare, a stark contrast to their representation at entry-level positions. This disparity not only reflects the ongoing challenges in career advancement but also highlights the crucial need for targeted efforts to support and promote Black women in our industry. Efforts to close this gap include enhancing recruitment and promotion strategies, supporting robust diversity and inclusion initiatives, and fostering mentorship programs that aim to increase the visibility and leadership of Black women in healthcare. As leaders and professionals committed to equity, we must intensify our efforts to ensure our leadership demographics mirror the diverse populations we serve. It’s imperative to support policies that facilitate real change and provide a supportive environment where all talented professionals can thrive. I am determined to break this cycle, even if it means being the first but certainly not the last. From exits to groundbreaking entries, influencers like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and Barbie impact global conversations. Now on the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women list, emphasizing the ongoing need for women in seats of power. #WomenLeadership #GlobalImpact2023

I am deeply grateful to have joined the Association of National Advertisers SEE HER conference today alongside industry change makers like Lisa Lucatuorto Mallen and Sheereen Miller-Russell where we engaged in a thought provoking discussions on the representation of women both in front of and behind the camera, as well as within the spheres of marketing and advertising creativity. Despite women making up approximately 50% of the population, their representation in leadership roles within the media and advertising industries tells a different story. Currently, women hold only about 32% of executive positions in major media companies, and the gap widens further in creative director roles at top advertising agencies. This disparity is not just a challenge; it is a vast opportunity for innovation and growth. As we delve into the statistics, it's clear that while women are underrepresented, diverse women represent the fastest-growing demographic in the United States. This shift presents a unique chance for businesses to connect with their audience through more inclusive and representative marketing strategies. To my fellow CMOs and industry leaders, let us take this opportunity to champion the cause of not only elevating women but also ensuring that diverse voices are heard and showcased in our campaigns. By doing so, we are not just closing the representation gap; we are also crafting marketing strategies that resonate more authentically with our audiences, driving engagement and fostering brand loyalty in an increasingly competitive landscape. Let's continue to push the boundaries of creativity and leadership by embracing diversity as a cornerstone of our industry's future. Why does representation matter? Growing up in North Florida, I saw women in traditional roles such as caretaking, cleaning, cashiering, administrative, and teaching. It wasn't until I moved to the midwest and began to see women in more powerful positions that I began to dream bigger for my career. And that was just ten years ago. Representation matters because it has the power to inspire young women to dream bigger. If they can see themselves in those positions much younger, just imagine the impact we could make on society. Logically, it may not make sense, but representation has a powerful effect on our aspirations and goals. It’s visual vs. logical. Let's continue to push for more representation in leadership positions.
