Ever wondered what a road looks like under the surface? Take this diagram from the Bridge Inn Road Upgrade, where we've excavated the road down to ‘formation level’ at the intersection of Bassetts Road and Vantage Point Boulevard. If our crew digs down to the subgrade level and the material is stable, then we build up the pavement from there. But sometimes we find that ground conditions are a little softer than anticipated, and we need to do some extra earthworks to bring it up to standard. After that, we’ll: - Install new traffic lights - Reinstate the bus stop - Install new kerbs - Lay new asphalt  - Complete line marking All these activities are part of a detailed methodology for upgrading intersections. £82M Dawlish sea wall passes ‘toughest test yet’ against Storms Babet and Ciarán. Network Rail has detailed how the £82M spent on constructing the sea wall in Dawlish as part of the South West Rail Resilience Programme has been invaluable after it succeeded in its “toughest test yet” surviving a very stormy recent period for the south west coast. The wall, which fully opened to the public this May, faced 5m waves at high tide, wind speeds of almost 130km/h and constant rain during Storm Ciarán on 1 and 2 November, much the same as the weather conditions of the infamous storm of 2014 that destroyed part of the railway in Dawlish. This incident left the south west completely inaccessible by train and cut off from the rest of the UK. Plan ahead: #NewYorkRoad tunnel closure for essential maintenance from 12 February. #NewYorkRoadTunnel, located just outside the #LeedsCityCentre and on Leeds #InnerRingRoad, will close to all vehicles on Monday 12 February until the autumn to enable essential maintenance of the #NewYorkRoadFlyover. #LeedsCityCouncil along with construction partner #BalfourBeatty will carry out repair works and replace 27 bearings on #NewYorkRoadFlyover. Bearing replacement on the flyover is a vital process, that whilst only completed generally every 25-50 years, is essential to ensure the serviceable life of the flyover is maintained and subsequently this section of the flyover can remain open in the long term. Modern bridges are designed to make future bearing replacement straight forward. However older bridges, such as the #NewYorkRoadFlyover, require substantial temporary works with heavy equipment including temporary foundations to support the bridge at each bearing.
