We're delighted to showcase Maya Kanani, an active member of our Diversity and Inclusion committee. Maya's lived experience offers invaluable insights into the significance of fostering an inclusive environment. Her firsthand perspective ensures our efforts to create a culture of belonging resonate with everyone. 🤝 Check out this insightful Q&A in honour of Asian Heritage Month ❓ What was your career-defining moment? How did it shape, change or reinforce your practice? 🅰 "I’ve had a few career-defining moments but the first one is likely the first time I did a trial. This was the first time I had the opportunity to use all the skills that I had picked up along the way and argued pre-trial motions in front of a judge. The trial confirmed that I was doing what I was meant to be doing, and quite frankly, was the first time I felt that I truly belonged in the profession." ❓The law is notorious for being slow to adapt and evolve, how do you hope the practice and the profession will change or evolve in future years? 🅰"I’d like to continue to see diverse candidates choose law over other more traditional jobs. The law will only get better and adapt with the views of society generally if people from all walks of life get the opportunity to attend law school and overcome barriers." ❓ What does diversity and inclusion for Canadian defence lawyers look like to you? 🅰"This is a tough question. To me, it looks like an understanding of the unique backgrounds of each member of the community and an acceptance of that. Every member should be treated with kindness and respect, no matter who they are, what they look like, or where they come from. I look forward to the CDL continuing to put on educational programming to broaden the horizons of its members."

Whilst an increase in the proportion of black and other ethnic minority lawyers in firms is a positive step forward, these percentages are still far from representative of our communities. We know that there are no shortages in terms of candidates/applicants so why the snail's pace improvement? The 19% equity partnership figure is also interesting. Wonder how that is split between sole practitioner/high street practices and larger corporate/commercial firms 🤔.

There has been a steady increase in the proportion of Black, Asian and minority ethnic lawyers in law firms, from 14% in 2015 to 19% in 2023. Our firm diversity report also showed that the overall proportion of equity partners (19%) is higher than that of salaried partners (14%) #diversity
