Each year on June 15th we celebrate International Women in Mining Day, recognizing the trail blazers, both women and men, who have laid the path for inclusivity and empowerment in mining throughout the world.   The 2024 theme is, “I am Mining and I Belong”. As the mining sector continues to evolve, this phrase serves as a powerful reminder of the diverse individuals who contribute to it and the importance of creating a more inclusive and sustainable future for all. At Procon this theme goes further, as it underscores the importance of culture and inclusivity that is fostered day in and out throughout the company. As per Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) women make up 7.9% of the Canadian underground mining workforce (2024). Procon is a proud employer of women at our project sites and offices across Canada. While at PDAC, Canada Nickel Company’s Director of Indigenous Relations and Public Affairs, Sydney Oakes, attended Minister Pirie’s Mining Industry Council roundtable, alongside Premier Doug Ford, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Vic Fedeli, and industry executives. Focusing on gender diversity, she highlighted the stark contrast in the mining industries workforce: women only represent 14% of the mining sector. It’s clear that the challenge isn’t just attracting women to mining but also retaining them, underscoring the need for industry and government collaboration to foster a more inclusive environment. I really can’t wait to join in the celebrations for the 2024 International Day of Women in Mining (IDWIM) and moderate a panel on “Breaking Ground in Belonging”. Today “belonging” is one of the biggest buzzwords - and we now know it is the highest predictor of employee engagement, job satisfaction and motivation for talent. Forcing employees to change behaviours that misalign with their authentic selves is one way for companies to see increased absenteeism, turnover, poor attraction, and ultimately less productivity. An authentic culture of belonging in the workplace matters because it impacts business performance and employee well-being. Belonging is vital for bringing out the best of everyone at work.
