This week we hosted our Focus on Mining camp, and had the pleasure of welcoming 19 students in Years 11 and 12 to our Kalgoorlie campus to give them a taste of what opportunities can await them in mining. Their tour kicked off on Tuesday with a visit to BHP’s Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, before exploring a number of facilities housed at our Kalgoorlie campus, including our geomechanics laboratory to discover rock stability in mining, a gold electroplating demonstration in our hydrometallurgy laboratory, as well as a visit to our rock museum to discover the rich mining heritage of the Goldfields. The following day, the group visited Northern Star Resources Limited's KCGM operations, that includes the Super Pit and Mt Charlotte underground mine. Year after year we receive overwhelmingly positive feedback from student participants who find the camp’s activities insightful, and leave feeling inspired to pursue a career in mining. One participant said the camp helped her understand the range of career pathways offered by the WA mining industry. “We learnt about all of the careers involved in mining – I didn’t know that there were so many difference options.” Another student explained how her experience provided her with an introduction to what can lay ahead in mining. “It’s really nice that we’re able to come and see real-life mining operations. In school it’s theoretical, but it’s great to see it in person and how it affects the world.” Our Focus on Mining Camps take place in January and July every year, with major sponsorship from Northern Star Resources, together with further support from IGO Ltd and WA School of Mines Alumni. Do you know what the guy in this cartoon is holding? I had a mining professional this week tell me that the front cover of my kid's book maybe off putting for some parents as this device looks like a gun! I'm open to feedback and learning, so I wanted to share some of my basic knowledge, dating back to my early days at Daisy Milano! Outlining the use of an airleg machine in an underground mine AIRLEG MINING: An airleg miner operates pneumatic drills and jacks to extract ore from hard rock underground mines, often working in confined spaces to advance mine workings. This work is supported by a mechanical "airleg" to mine hard rock deep underground. This technique is particularly effective for following narrow mineral veins, allowing miners to precisely target valuable resources deep in the earth. MY ASK: Every week I will share a small fact about a process or machine used in mining - it may be great for children or just general knowledge for those on the fringes of the sector. If you think this is an interesting concept could you share with or tag a friend who may find this sort of content fun, or work in STEM delivery with the next generation? I'm going to start the train with a few who I think will like this concept: Holly Bridgwater/ Alex Bertram 🌏 / Kylah Morrison MEM GAICD / Patrick Enright / Ed Lewis / Ernest V. (Ernie) Schaffernicht / Renu Kannu / Dale Murugan / Andrew McCulloch / Sean Robertson / Peter Wilson / Brenton McWhirter / Brendan Parker Link to explore my mining focused children's books in further detail: https://lnkd.in/g9MigWhv #stemeducation #miningfacts #undergroundmining

Educators are known for travelling over their breaks, yet where our President & CEO, Joanne Sallay, visited this August may surprise you. She was invited on a "Life in a Mining Camp" tour at the Côté Gold Mine in Gogama, Ontario, alongside 20 educators from across the province. It’s known that many students (and grown-ups) do not know much about #mining, and what they do know is likely out of date. However, Joanne's trip felt more like a glimpse into the famous cartoon, The Jetsons, where cutting-edge technology is the norm. If you're interested in getting a glimpse of what the educators experienced—an exciting world of STEM, self-autonomous trucks, and robotic dogs—instead of old notions of mining, this blog is for you! At Teachers on Call, we believe that helping students be successful in school and life, including navigating future career pathways, is an important role we play. A big thank you to our educator tour organizers — The Canadian Ecology Centre, Mining Matters, and the Ontario Mining Association — and mining host IAMGOLD Corporation. Founder BeE3 LabTech & Mining AI Tech & IMSS |Msc Computer Science | Artificial Intelligence | Optimization & Simulation|
🚀 Model , Simulation and Optimization in Mine Operations 🚀 In my latest study, I moved away from the global perspective of a mine to explore how to maximize operations, reduce costs, and ensure a safe mine from an operational standpoint. While there are dispatch systems and short-term planning, none have solved the problem of maximizing operations in terms of haulage and loading under operational constraints and safety considerations. This is because they have not built a system capable of simulating, optimizing, and recommending actions. Questions like "How many trucks will we need in three years?", "What is the queue level associated with a fleet increase?" or "How does costs evolve and what are the associated risks?" can only be answered with a dynamic system, or in simpler terms, a simulation. So, how do we do it? I took the liberty of creating a mathematical model that integrates the different components of such a system. Subsequently, I built a simulation model and incorporated an optimizer based on the mathematical model. This resulted in my mining engineering thesis, which can be found at my school Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería de Perú, but here I share a summary. Modeling this subsystem helped me understand that if you want to know the economic, environmental, social, and safety implications of a system, you need to forget about Excel and static formulas, and simulate by building a dynamic system that accounts for time and where variables interact in ways you can't imagine. This will help you make informed decisions. Often, I am asked, "How did your model perform?" Well, to be honest, I achieved 98% accuracy in Pierina, Lagunas Norte, Antamina, Brocal, Marcobre, Hudbay, and Escondida BHP when I simulated these mines as a consultant. This success led me to receive a grade of 19 on my thesis, thanks to the support of Henry Brañes Gallardo and CARMEN MATOS, who helped me refine my model and present it as a real thesis. I am excited to share this evolving paper with you, which is officially available on the website of our company BeE3 LabTech Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería de Perú Colorado School of Mines University of Toronto #MiningInnovation #DynamicSimulation #OperationalOptimization #SustainableMining #MiningEngineering #MathematicalModeling #DigitalTransformation #SmartMining #DecisionMaking #MiningTechnology #DynamicSystems #ProcessOptimization

As an industry we have been discussing the dwindling talent pool in the Mine Engineering space for at least 20 years (probably longer). We know that the educational opportunities for Mine Engineering students in the US have been decimated. How can the industry inspire young people to come join us on our mission? Something for all of us to consider.
This week William Zisch, the Department Head of Mining Engineering at Mines, testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Subcommittee on Employment & Workplace Safety on efforts to strategically rebuild the U.S. minerals workforce. “At Colorado School of Mines, we are working to educate and prepare students for the essential link between mining, minerals, responsible resource management, and sustainable energy,” said Zisch. "The opportunity before us is to engage and inspire the next generation of mining minerals professionals with a passion for impactful careers in a sector innovating to support our economic, energy and security future.” Thank you to Senator John Hickenlooper, Senator Braun, as well as the other witnesses, Barb Arnold with Penn State University ; Gracelin Baskaran, PhD with Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and Jonathan Evans with Lithium Americas Corp. for your efforts reestablish our mineral workforce as a critical element of the U.S. economic, energy, and security future.
