There is one thing I often see missing from Pride Month programming that is part of other communities' months of awareness and celebrations: The ways in which LGBTQ+ have shaped and made the world better for all of us. Of course, it's important to find moments of joy and celebration, as well as a time to raise awareness of ongoing issues (515 anti-LGBT bills in 2024). It is also important for people to see themselves represented, and understand how people like them, people from their community, have contributed to everyone having a better experience in this world. There is an undeniable link between our self-esteem and knowing our history, our value, our power. So I share with you today three LGBTQ+ people who helped us: - defeat the Nazis in World War II - draft the Economic Bill of Rights with Franklin D. Roosevelt - establish a model for social welfare It is important for both LGBTQ+ people and allies alike, to inform themselves of the value, contributions, and excellence of our community. For LGBTQ+ folks to see their footprint in this world, and for allies to be appreciative of the benefits. I've had the privilege of meeting many inspiring LGBTQ+ business leaders over the past few months. However, I've noticed a common theme in our conversations. Many of these leaders express feeling like they're on the outside, not part of the traditional straight, white male networks. But when I ask how they leverage their own LGBTQ+ network, I often get silence. Digging deeper, it becomes clear that they actually have a strong queer network, but they're not tapping into it enough for business purposes. Not to mention that they are working on actively expanding and utilizing their LGBTQ+ network. It's time to stop lamenting about not being part of certain networks and start utilizing the power of our own LGBTQ+ business networks. They're stronger than we realize. I always think of today, as we celebrate International Pride Day, as a day to honor respect in its deepest essence. Yes, we need to talk about this throughout the year, and yes, we need to talk about it today, which marks a significant milestone in the struggle of the LGBTQ+ community worldwide. This date primarily aims to raise awareness about the importance of building a society free of prejudice and equal for all, where everyone is respected and has their rights guaranteed. As a leader, I feel a responsibility to create opportunities for everyone to access dignified work, feel included, and be supported by equitable development and career policies. We play a crucial role in welcoming people and engaging in discussions about policies, practices, and initiatives that continuously advance the inclusion and equity agenda. As individuals, we need to broaden our worldview and understand that "exclusion" is often our default mode, while "inclusion" requires intention, learning, listening, and empathy.   When the LGBTQ+ community represent roughly 8% of Australia’s population, why are they only making up 1% of board seats in the ASX300? Watermark’s 2024 Board Diversity Index found that 4 directors openly identify as LGBTQ+ in publicly available reports, although research by the Australian Association of LGBTQ+ Board and Executive Inclusion (ALBEI) shows there are as many as 20 LGBTQ+ directors in 2024. This is such a small percentage of the LGBTQ+ community.   It would not be the case that such a significant proportion of LGBTQ+ people are not board ready. We need to go beyond our usual networks to find candidates that hit the mark with both meritocracy and diversity. Pridemonth is a monumental time of the year. It is a time to remember the remarkable equal rights journey the LGBTQ+ community has fought for decades. And it is a month where I personally take some time to reflect on how far we’ve come as a country. Pride Month also serves as a reminder of the importance of respect and inclusivity in all aspects of our lives. 🌈 It’s June! LGBTQ+ Pride Month. It's also “𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙗𝙤𝙬 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙢” month for many. Support takes more. As August approaches, it's crucial to remember that Pride isn't just a month-long celebration; it's a commitment we need to uphold every day. As allies and advocates, our support for the LGBTQ+ community must be unwavering, 365 days a year. This is especially important for our friends in the United States, who are facing a critical election. The stakes are high, with former President Trump running on a platform that includes rolling back hard-won LGBTQ+ rights and threatening broader human rights. The next few months are pivotal in ensuring that these rights are not only preserved but strengthened. Now, more than ever, we need to stand up, speak out, and take action. Being an ally means educating ourselves, supporting LGBTQ+ organizations, and voting for leaders who champion equality and justice for all.
