This visualization of a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layer on graphene was achieved through photothermal torsional resonance imaging, a technique that sidesteps the need for electrical excitation, offering an alternative approach to studying these complex structures. Our CleanDrive technology was instrumental in photothermally exciting the torsional resonance, allowing us to observe these patterns with remarkable clarity. The image captures a moiré superlattice pattern, with a subtle 2.2° twist between the layers. I am excited to share our latest paper, "Self-assembled photonic cavities with atomic-scale confinement," published today in Nature. We demonstrate a method that uses surface forces, including Casimir–van der Waals interactions, to deterministically self-assemble suspended silicon nanostructures with void features well below the conventional length scales that enable extreme light confinement. Our approach has paved the way for impossible-to-make nanostructures: Waveguide-coupled high-Q silicon photonic cavities that confine telecom photons to 2 nm air gaps with an aspect ratio of 100 corresponding to mode volumes more than 100 times below the diffraction limit. Our work constitutes the first steps towards a new generation of fabrication technology that combines the self-assembly-enabled atomic dimensions with the scalability of top-down nanopatterning. We hope our work will inspire others in the field to make nanostructures that are otherwise impossible with conventional lithography techniques. Have you heard of "Nano-Ironing"? Did you know that Thermal Scanning Probe Lithography (t-SPL) can create exceptionally low-disorder interfaces in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures? The recent paper "Nanoironing van der Waals Heterostructures toward Electrically Controlled Quantum Dots" published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces dives into the realm of two-dimensional vdW-layered materials and their transformative potential in advanced device applications like optoelectronics, valleytronics, spintronics, and quantum technology. Nanoironing is a technique that involves the use of a thermal scanning probe to physically manipulate and smooth out the layers in vdW heterostructures. This process can significantly enhance the quality of the interfaces between the layers, which is critical for the performance of the resulting devices. Key Highlights: ▪ Precision and Control: Thermal scanning probes allow for nanoscale precision in manipulating material interfaces, enabling the creation of exceptionally low-disorder interfaces in vdW heterostructures and ensuring pristine conditions crucial for maximizing device performance. ▪ Enhanced Electrical Performance: Monolayer WS2 transistors crafted using this technique exhibit up to an order of magnitude improvement in electrical performance, showcasing its potential to significantly enhance device efficiency. ▪ Quantum Dot Control: vdW heterostructures with low interface disorder can enable precise electrical formation and control of quantum dots. This tunability ranges from macroscopic current flow to the single-electron tunneling regime, opening new avenues in quantum computing and nanoelectronics. These findings pave the way for the construction of superior vdW heterostructures, vital for fundamental research and the development of next-generation quantum and nano-electronic devices. They also underscore the importance of t-SPL in pushing the boundaries of nanotechnology and quantum computing. We are excited about the possibilities this technology holds for future innovations. The achieved pulse duration amounted to #57 #fs on the workpiece. We are delighted that the collaboration between Malvern Panalytical and the University of Twente’s XUV Optics Research Group has been extended! Many everyday electronic devices contain nanostructures, such as thin films. These crucial structures measure just fractions of a nanometer to several micrometers thick and require X-ray analysis for reliable characterization. Research and development of new X-ray instruments, methods, and data analysis is vital for improving semiconductors and advanced materials. The collaboration will involve both experimental and theoretical work on the fundamentals of new X-ray metrology and X-ray data analyses. Central to the collaboration is a research program focused on extending the frontiers for thin film X-ray characterization through a fundamental study of the X-ray scattering process. The project focuses on both computational and experimental aspects of hybrid (structural and elemental) characterization of thin films and their interfaces.
