It was a joy to attend this webinar by Kerry Wixted last night! I learned so much about salamander biodiversity, amphibian diseases, and what members of Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) are doing to protect these wonderful creatures. As a graduate in #medicinalchemistry, I was especially excited to hear that the medicinal properties of amphibians' secretions are well-known in this field and that possible treatments are being developed for amphibian diseases. Perhaps my goal of doing some "frog chemistry" is not unrealistic after all! #amphibiandiseases #amphibianconservation

🐝🌾Preserving #biodiversity in agricultural areas is crucial for food security and many important ecosystem services, like pollination, water regulation and soil fertility. However, biodiversity continues to decline in Europe at an alarming rate, especially in agricultural regions. Together with project partners from 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝟰𝗚𝗜, adelphi has engaged with German farmers themselves to identify challenges and develop effective solutions. In the most recent policy brief, presented to members of the Bundestag and Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft , results from an exchange process with farmers in Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia were reported. Recommendations include: 💲increasing budgets for eco-schemes, 📝 simplifying administrative processes, and 💡providing better information and advisory support Discover more about the project (in English) here: ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e4SqiZCb Access the policy brief (in German) here: ➡️https://lnkd.in/dh9sH4ZD Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany, Bodensee-Stiftung, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), Universität Rostock, #DeutscherNaturschutzring, #WildtierlandHainich, Florian Schöne, Sarah Velten, Prof. Dr. Sebastian Lakner

Advocacy,Networking and Communication officer at Slow Food Kenya 🐌, Communication person at SFYN Africa,Global SFYN Academy coordinator, Entrepreneur for Rural Access at Access Agriculture.
“Biodiversity is the greatest promise for the future of humankind.” Carlo Petrini President of the University of Gastronomic Sciences - Pollenzo Founder of Slow Food. Without it, the foundation for human life on the planet is lost, as is the very soil on which civilizations and cultures have been shaped and formed as the result of human adaptation to the natural environment. Defending, protecting, and promoting biodiversity is therefore not simply one among a number of choices, advanced by the intellectuals of conservation or by nostalgic environmentalists: It is, rather, the only viable path forward. It is a moral duty that we, the generation that inhabits this historic moment, must take on for those who will come after us and live on this planet Earth, a planet that, today, we are trampling, hurting, and mistreating. From this point of view, the Ark of Taste (https://lnkd.in/dkGCWzCv), a global project that this book takes up in its African—and, in particular, Kenyan—context, is an initiative that seeks to create information, knowledge, and awareness about this unique heritage. Through the Ark, communities are invited to rediscover their agricultural and food heritage, in order not to lose the connection with the land that feeds us and will continue to feed us.

SAVE THE DATE! Voices of the Cerrado – Hearing and learning from traditional and indigenous peoples of the Brazilian Savanna GUESTS: Rede Cerrado, #ISPN and #APIB +INFO https://lnkd.in/eZvPDgGG DATE: 11 March TIME: 15.00 to 16.30 ACTIVITY: DIALOGUES WITH CIVIL SOCIETY (#NALACS) LANGUAGE: Portuguese with English translation VENUE: CEDLA Room 2.02 (2nd floor) Have you ever heard of the #BrazilianCerrado? It’s a unique but not very well-known #biome of stunning natural beauty, home to many plants, animals and peoples, but under increasing threat from agricultural expansion. During this dialogue, the indigenous leaders Dinamam Tuxá and Eliane Xunakalo, together with the traditional peoples’ leadership of Lourdes Nascimento and Samuel – the general coordinator and the advisor for the Cerrado Network, respectively – will tell their personal stories about this the critical relevance and the challenges taking place in the biome. The guests will approach the current reality faced by the Cerrado Peoples in their territory and the vital importance of this land for their lives and for the conservation of biodiversity and halting climate change. They will share their perspectives about the protection of nature and their cultures from and the need to tackle the increasing threats of rapid soy expansion for animal feed and livestock production over their lands. The Netherlands is one of the main importers of this soy produced in the Cerrado, as the country is an important trading route and end-user of soy for feed in the intensive Dutch livestock industry. The European Union recently adopted a new regulation to curb Europe’s deforestation footprint – an important step forward, but will it help to combat the destruction of Cerrado’s natural habitats? In this dialogue session, we will learn more about the reality of the Cerrado and its local peoples, and jointly explore strategies and solutions to protect the Cerrado, to save their lands as well as our collective future. Why do we need more collaborative spaces for courageous exchange? Because without honest and open dialogue, we'll never be able to overcome current barriers, stereotypes and conflicts – let alone find actionable pathways that do justice and are life-giving to those involved. Together with my amazing colleague and manager Gesche Schifferdecker, I think a lot about what it means to bring different kinds of people from various backgrounds, professions and expertise together to reveal and exchange perspectives. Why? Because we believe that through building empathy for and better understanding of the complexity at hand, we can move closer to finding integrative solutions for ourselves and the environments we care about. As any facilitator knows – enabling spaces for courageous exchange can be challenging. Many people are taught assertiveness in immediately opposing and counteracting views they don’t necessarily relate to or believe in. That's of course an important skill for fruitful debates. But what if we can learn to bring the same type of assertiveness to the ways in which we listen to those we don’t necessarily agree with? What if we allow ourselves to sit in the shoes of those that struggle with very different questions, needs and obstacles? We think this can help strengthen the quality of our exchange and build stronger networks of collaboration. As part of the European Forest Institute's Annual Conference, we hosted a TRANSFORMIT Project "Network of Networks" meeting, aiming to bring together different European stakeholders working with forests. Thank you to all who participated & supported!
We had an incredible #NetworkOfNetworks meeting on 18 Sep, bringing together a diverse group of professionals across #policy, #science, nature #conservation, and #media to discuss the future of #IntegrativeForestManagement. 🌲 Prof. Georg Winkel kicked off the afternoon with a thought-provoking keynote speech on balancing multiple ecosystem services and #forest conservation goals. The #WorldCafé sessions followed fostered vibrant discussions on breaking down silos, promoting collaboration, and creating synergies for a sustainable future. A big thank you to our table hosts for facilitating these discussions: Policy: Steven Dörr (Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture) Nature Conservation: Zoltan Kun (Wild Europe Foundation) Media/Society: Monika Seynsche (Science Journalist and Moderator) Science: Bernhard Wolfslehner (European Forest Institute) Forest Owners: Lucas von Fürstenberg (Freiherr von Fürstenberg’sche Forstverwaltung) Thank you to all who joined and contributed to the dialogue! Stay tuned for the harvests from this meeting ✨
