Tiny reduction in job vacancies in Queensland Government since my post one month ago - as at today there are 2,244 jobs available. 229 vacancies are at AO1/AO2/AO3 which is entry level if you have limited or no professional experience. Great place to start - I got an AO2 job when I moved up from Sydney (last century!) because I needed money to pay the rent. Had no idea it was the beginning of an incredibly varied and rewarding 20-year career. 75 vacancies are at AO8 level which are generally operational management roles for programs, projects or frontline services. This is the level where I spent most of my career, learnt important leadership lessons, and for which I have the fondest memories of professional and personal growth, as well as enduring friendships. 🧡 8 vacancies are at SES level so if you're ready to take the next step as, say, Regional Director, Executive Director, Deputy Director-General or Director-General, you could start checking out these roles. If you'd like any hints, tips or intel, feel free to message me directly or via contact@helenangelataylor.com 😊 #jobvacancies #queenslandgovernment #getthatjob #dreamjob #jobapplications #jobgym https://lnkd.in/gWwMJNzx

We're three months out from a State Election in Queensland. Slight increase in government job vacancies since my last post - currently 2,414 jobs on offer. A couple of weeks ago, someone asked me a very practical question - how to find entry level jobs ...? Here's what I told them, in case it's useful for you as well: The best way to find agencies offering entry-level jobs is to select the level (AO1 or AO2) in the relevant search field on Smart Jobs. For example, on the Job Search page in Smart Jobs I just scrolled all the way down to the end and ticked the ‘more search options’ box. Then I scrolled down to the ‘Classification’ section, picked AO1 then pressed the search button. (Today that search shows one job.) I then went back to the fresh Search page and did the same for AO2 classification. (Today that search shows 29 jobs.) I wish you all the best on your job hunt. 😊 #career #jobhunt #jobgym #application #interview #resume #CV https://lnkd.in/gDkyFEBN

There are 247 less job vacancies in Queensland Government than this time last month. ⬇ I've noticed over the years that vacancy numbers often reduce coming into the end of a financial year, followed by a spurt of recruitment activity once the new financial year starts. But, this year, I think the key driver for job vacancies will likely be our State Election on 26 October 2024. Fifteen percent (15%) of the current vacancies on Smart Jobs are for 'talent pool' roles, which refers to a register of interested and suitable candidates for particular roles. These are often frontline positions where staff turnover is high or specialist knowledge and skills are needed, say in health or technology. You submit an application which the agency adds to their register, then they draw from that register when needed. If you want to check out the Queensland Government's current talent pool vacancies just enter 'talent pool' into the 'key word' field on the search page. #getthatjob #jobapplication #applyforjob #governmentjobs #publicsector #queenslandgovernment #helenangelataylor #jobgym https://lnkd.in/gWwMJNzx

Early Careers Specialist working with optical and healthcare business leaders to build their talent pipelines | Founder @Into Optics | Creator and co-host of the Eye-Opening Careers Podcast 🎙️
Personally, I failed to engage with the careers support available in my school. They did the best they could with the resources they had, but most of my careers conversations were delivered by teachers who had no experience of the industries they were discussing, and sessions typically included scrolling websites or completing activity sheets. As a kinaesthetic / auditory learner, this was my worst nightmare. I zoned out, smiled politely and got through the lesson as quickly as possible - leaving with zero knowledge of the career path I wanted to take. Despite this, my teachers were approachable and generous with their time, so when I did finally have an idea about what I was interested in, they were able to help me make an appropriate plan. But for students lacking in confidence and perhaps facing additional challenges in school and at home - I know this wasn’t the case. During my time working for Aimhigher (a national, government funded initiative to provide inspirational careers advice and guidance to young people from low-socio economic backgrounds) I saw the difference this work made. I saw students who appeared to be disruptive, disengaged (and no doubt expecting to be bored to tears) come to life, get involved in challenges and leave with a positive and wider view of the world (not bad for a 60-minute workshop!). Connexions was also available at that time, a face-to-face service, providing careers advice in schools and colleges, and local drop-in centres. This meant students could access services easily and knew where to go to get support (the drop-in centres meant that parents could also access information for their children). Whilst the overall impact of these services probably varied across the UK (local authorities had responsibility of how the budgets were managed) the biggest benefit was that all students had access to the same support, regardless of their school’s budget. Teachers were able to focus on teaching as careers support was fully funded and outsourced, and there was greater awareness about where to access help. So whilst there is lots of great work being done throughout the UK (The Careers & Enterprise Company, a government funded organisation focussed on supporting and linking schools with employers via the Gatsby Benchmark, is one to note, as well as many other local authority/ charitable initiatives) schools are still having to do most of the leg work, with next to zero budgets. Another reason why employer support is of the utmost value, in helping guide and support our future generations. It’s great to see West Yorkshire focussing on this important issue - if you’re located in the region, here’s an opportunity to share feedback on the careers advice you received at school / college (open to all ages). You never know, it might just help secure the funding that in my opinion, is so desperately needed! #careerssupport #westyorkshire
Thinking back to any careers advice you’ve been given, did you find it useful, motivating or unhelpful? The West Yorkshire Combined Authority is welcoming feedback from people of all ages in West Yorkshire. Share your experience at https://lnkd.in/euCc3dF5 @MayorofWY @WestYorkshireCombinedAuthority

As a job seeker, I was once told, by a noted HR consultant that my degree would determine my career prospects. While it was disheartening at first, I refused to be defined by my field of study alone. By persistently applying and believing in my diverse experiences, I've defied expectations and received multiple job offers outside my academic realm. To my fellow job seekers facing similar constraints, remember: don't let anyone confine you to a box. Your skills and determination will lead you to the right opportunity. To hiring managers in Jamaica, it's time to hire based on experiences and skills, not just degrees. Let's redefine traditional hiring norms and embrace the value of diverse expertise. Your next top talent might not fit the conventional mould. #SkillsOverDegrees #JobMarketReform #BeyondTheDegree #JobHuntingJourney

Finding new and diverse talent pipelines is hard. It's also scary. It's scary because you're challenging those neural pathways and trying something new, which evokes feelings of risk. What if I can't relate or communicate with someone who doesn't have a story or a background like mine? What if I say the wrong thing or cause offence? I'll be discussing these and other barriers and hearing from employers who are reaping the benefits of a diverse workforce at an Employer Breakfast hosted by Dublin South City Partnership on Tuesday, June 25th, at Hilton Dublin Kilmainham. We'll be addressing the challenges and hearing about the successes. As an employer, you'll get a chance to ask those burning questions either to the panel or quietly at our networking session after the event. If you've read this far, you're already interested. All you have to do is register to attend. #diversity #inclusion #esg #csrd #workequal https://lnkd.in/ewp3-pGb
