Every year, Black History Month serves as the perfect opportunity for us to remember, honor, and appreciate the generations of African Americans who have shaped our history and future. This year's theme, African Americans and the Arts, encourages all Americans to explore the remarkable artistic legacy of African Americans, underscoring this community’s pivotal role in our nation's artistic landscape. In appreciation of this theme, we’re taking the time to learn more about the remarkable contributions of African American artists, past and present. Is there a resource that’s been particularly helpful or meaningful to you related to Black History? Drop it in the comments; we’d love to take a look. #BlackHistoryExcellence #TrailblazersLegacy #BlackInnovationInspires #DiverseVoicesMatter #UnityInDiversity #LeadershipLegacy #EmpowerTogether #CulturalHarmony #InclusiveInnovation

Black History Month 2024 Theme: Black History Month and Beyond. Extracts from my opening remarks on February 1st: "Black History month should be about commemorating and celebrating the efforts and achievements of Canadians of Black Heritage who have made tremendous historical strides AND also about the everyday folks who sit and work with you and I on a daily basis; whose names do not always get printed in the media – those who have done and continue to do exceptional work but are not always recognized for it". "As we begin this month, I ask you not to forget about Black History after 11:59pm, February 29, 2024 nor ignore it until February 1, 2025. It is time to see folks of Black Heritage beyond the stereotypes shown on tv or imbedded in systems. It is time to see us (Black folks) in our unique experiences and accomplishments. It is time to move away from performative gestures and discussions on slavery into discussions that birth equitable actions all year round, and mend the relationships between black folks and the communities we work & reside in." #edi #dei #edmonton #yeg #canada #blackhistorymonth #blackexcellence #bhm2024 #equity #yegbusiness Tamarack Institute for Community Engagement #edmontonchamber Ken Gee

It is officially #BlackHistoryMonth! As we enter into a month that encourages reflection and learning, I encourage anyone on this platform to lean into the rich history of Black and Brown Americans. This month is dedicated to honoring a resilient past, applauding what has been accomplished today, and encouraging all of us to be a part of the movement to elevate the black community into the abundant future we deserve. So much of what everyone appreciates today - art, food, music, fashion, and more - was created, inspired, elevated, evolved, and enhanced by someone in the black community. The little-told stories of history are vital and we can't allow those facts to be dismissed, diminished, or erased. As the founder of Black History Month, Carter Godwin Woodson stated, "If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes an unimportant factor in the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated." Let's never let that happen. Black history deserves to be remembered and taught because what anyone will hear in every story is hope, resilience, strength, creativity, persistence, determination, leadership, and grit. Check out the video below as a simple starting point. I challenge everyone to take 5-10 minutes every day this month to learn something new about Black History. Start at your dining room tables. Lean into your organization's ERGs, Affinity Groups, and Leadership Councils. Visit and support the black community in your region. Google. Read. Ask questions. Be open. Be intentional. There's so much to learn if you're willing to listen. *steps off soap box* Happy BHM, ya'll 🖤 #diversityequityinclusion #useyourvoice #organizationaldevelopment #culturematters https://lnkd.in/gCE9Jt7K

My Highlight Of The Week is from Morgan Freeman who talks about his issue with Black History Month: https://lnkd.in/eNXFjpPM The 18th of July marks the start of South Asian Heritage Month. I see colleagues celebrating and sharing their personal stories and those of the diaspora. I share many of their experiences. The goal of the month by the founder and colleague Dr Binita Kane is for the month not to exist. This I do not understand: how can you celebrate and educate heritage but not want to do this. If the goal is inclusion of South Asians into society, does celebrating our “otherness” seek to divide us from the rest of society? The balance between being proud of our identity and feeling at one with others is very fine. I think it’s important to define what success is with anything in life. Those in health inequalities spaces must define the exact moment when health equality is achieved. With heritage months, we must define what success is. If integration is the goal, when will integration be achieved? One of is his arguments are rooted in that Black History is American history and implies that celebrating Black History in a single month is tokenistic. Similarly South Asian heritage is British heritage: why would we celebrate it in a month? Some would say it’s not celebrated anyway - so this is our space to celebrate. His other argument suggests countering that educating people about Black History would not decrease racism. It’s hard to know if that’s true in the USA or the UK. However, I do think that those that are curious about other people’s ethnic background are a self-selecting bunch. The people who do not care about other people cannot be educated so I wonder whether this in fact is multiplying another kind of inverse-care law. The inverse-care law implies that those who need the most care are least likely to access that care, e.g. the poorest / marginalised in society. Similarly, those are in need of most education about different people’s journeys in life are least likely to care. Altogether I’m confused about South Asian Heritage month but one thing is for certain. I deeply proud of the sacrifices that my ancestors made for me to have such a great life with simple pleasures. I am proud of where I come from in the UK and beyond (it’s complicated). But, we must not forget how we as humans are more similar, than different.

As we kick off February & #blackhistorymonth I am reminded that there may not be much we can control in the freight market or overall global state, but we can control how we treat one another. Take time to let the people in your life know THEY MATTER. Celebrate victories and accomplishments. Connect with new thought leaders. Learn, grow, and evolve as a human. As the powerful quote form Harriet Tubman said, everything starts with a dreamer. Be the dreamer who images a better world for all people. #beagoodhuman #dei #learninganddevelopment #supplychain #transportation #trucking
Today we kick off Black History Month. "Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world." -- Harriet Tubman The TMSA DEI Task Force has highlighted some additional notable dates this month. #blackhistorymonth #dei #inclusion #bethechange
