If we've learned anything this summer with the various press tours of the hottest tv shows and movies, it's that consumers are more skeptical than ever. However, I choose to read it differently. In my opinion, consumers are starving for authenticity and genuineness more than ever. I'm a big fan of Bridgerton like so many others and loved the hype ahead of the much-anticipated third season showcasing the love story of "Polin." The press tour of Nicola Coughlin and Luke Newton showcased so much chemistry between the two and really made you believe that they had real life chemistry just like their characters on the show. Comment section after comment section, I saw audiences questioning how they could possibly not be a couple with the way they presented themselves in press opportunities in interviews and red carpet events. The moral of the story: #consumers and your audience at large are looking to connect with brands and organizations that lead with authenticity and just plain raw, reality. The polished photos, fancy graphics, and heavily produced #videos of the past have lost their edge. Just take a moment and look at the #analytics on your #content and #socialmedia and you'll quickly see for yourself which types of posts are performing the best.

If you're not listening carefully to your audience, you're at great risk. Just the latest reminder of this: a distinct lack of chatter I'm seeing about the Oscars, even though we're just a couple of days away from what is ostensibly the biggest entertainment event of the year. I'm not surprised, though, considering the growing divide between what audiences are actually watching and wanting, and what mainstream Hollywood entertainment is delivering. This disconnect—and its threat to the future of the entertainment business itself—was summed up neatly by Dr. Stacy L. S., a professor and founder of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism's Inclusion Initiative on a recent episode of Puck's "The Town" podcast. Here are a few of the choicest mic-drop moments from her interview with Matthew Belloni: 📣 𝐎𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐲𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧-𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐲 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬: "Though [the voters of the Academy and Hollywood green lighting teams] think they know what they’re choosing when it comes to talent, authenticity [and] powerful storytelling, they are at a complete disconnect from the audience." 📣 𝐎𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐆𝐞𝐧 𝐙 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐆𝐀𝐅 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐬: "The big joke is that, in a couple of Mondays, I’m going to go into class and ask: how many of you watched the Oscars? [Perhaps] 2 or 3 people [will] raise their hands. How many more years will this be televised? The audience doesn’t care.” 📣 𝐎𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: "There’s going to be a workforce crisis because the folks that are coming up through the ranks of these companies or graduating from colleges, they don't want to work at these legacy companies because of these very issues." 📣 𝐎𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐱 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦: "Those executive decision making bodies ... they need to change and they need to change fast."
