Project 2025, DEI fatigue, financial exclusion, political violence... the list goes on. As Black professionals in the DFW area, we know the weight of these issues can be heavy. We shouldn't have to shoulder the entire burden of progress. We deserve choices – who we love, where we live, even who we vote for. Being resilient is our superpower, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't prioritize our well-being. This includes systemic racism, discrimination, cultural stigma, and limited access to healthcare. June is Men's Health Awareness Month! This month, we're shining a light on the importance of mental health, especially for Black men. Black men face unique challenges when it comes to mental wellness, from stigma and lack of culturally competent care to systemic barriers. It's time to break the silence, support one another, and promote healing within our community. In communities like Oakland, Black men face unique challenges that can contribute to higher rates of mental health issues. Commemorating Juneteenth: Reflecting on Freedom and Mental Health Frederick Douglass once asked, “What to a slave is the Fourth of July?” Today, we ask ourselves how the legacy of slavery continues to impact mental health in Black communities. Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, but it also reminds us of the generational trauma that still echoes through time. As we honor Juneteenth, we must also acknowledge the ongoing systemic racism and discrimination that Black people and other people of color face in our society. Racism and discrimination have a significant impact on mental health, and it is essential to recognize and address this issue. Understanding this history helps us to break the cycles of trauma. By fostering open dialogues and educating ourselves, we can support the mental health of directly impacted individuals and their allies. As a mental health advocate, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of unspoken struggles—especially in the Black community. Today, I’m breaking the silence on the intersection of drug overdose and mental health, issues that continue to devastate lives while too often being overlooked. I also want to take a moment to honor the life of Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, whose passing reminds us of the urgency of these conversations. At The Confess Project Of America Official Page we’ve been fighting to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health and create safe spaces for real, honest dialogue. With drug overdose rates rising, especially in marginalized communities, it’s more critical than ever to address the mental health challenges, systemic barriers, and lack of resources that contribute to these tragedies. Let’s move forward by opening up these conversations and building support systems that foster healing and resilience. Let’s provide supports to allow an individual to learn how to manage their challenges, to choose mental wellness by taking advantage of programs or services available. You do not have to be sad or anxious all the time!

June is dedicated to raising awareness of Men's mental health and the unique challenges they face in our society. It's essential to check in on our loved ones, including our brothers, by asking a simple yet powerful question: "My Brother How Are You?" Research from NAMI reveals concerning trends where Black men often feel undervalued, making them less likely to seek mental health support. This lack of outreach, combined with implicit bias, discrimination, racism, and other barriers, hinders their access to care. Sadly, suicide is the third leading cause of death among Black men aged 15-24. By fostering open conversations and safe spaces for support, we can break the stigma and promote mental well-being. Let's advocate for mental health awareness and support for men, especially those in underserved communities. #MensMentalHealth #EndTheStigma #SupportEachOther

Depression in older Black womyn can have a different face due to culturally-sanctioned beliefs of life outcomes. But the fact is still the same, mental well-being is just as relevant as maintaining one’s physical health. The stigma associated with mental health and the notion that Black women are superheroes and can manage independently is stealing years and precious time that we “think” we have with our elders.
