(Part 2 of 2) As Foodsmart's Vice President of Growth, I have the pleasure and the mandate to construct the future programs that actualize nutrition care as a true link of the healthcare chain. I now bear witness that the greatest innovations in facilitating nutrition, population health, and social determinants of health care are led by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and from #ManagedCare Organizations. I have the great honor of partnering with some of the greatest minds in healthcare, all united in seeking to finally do more than TALK about "FOOD IS MEDICINE!," And as I have watched government programs gain new flexibilities to fund food as medicine for our most needy, I couldn't help but feel a growing ache in my stomach. I didn't understand it at first, but it somehow felt familiar. An old, familiar pain. It was my hunger pangs from fifteen years old from subsisting off frozen food in a pan. In a desperate effort to find solutions to the paradox of food insecurity and obesity/chronic disease, I can't help but be disturbed by the quickly-growing tidal wave of support for an incredibly reductive solution to an incredibly nuanced, HUMAN condition: let's just feed them frozen meals. Food is a human right. Food is a human EXPERIENCE. Food is a love language; for some, food is a drug (me). Food is not as simple as low-sodium slop in a pan on your doorstep, for nor are the people who receive that food nearly so simple. Our challenges around nutrition, food access, and affordability are complex, and they are inherently HUMAN PROBLEMS. For these problems I can only posit that the solution, too, must be a human one. A human conversation. A human-to-human navigation of the possible. Then, once we pair this with the incredible power of technology, do we have a real shot at FOOD IS MEDICINE. #Foodprescriptions helped people lower blood pressure and lose weight. How’s that for a novel approach v pill slinging? h/t Hippocrates 400 AD. -Let food be thy medicine. Excerpt A new kind of prescription could help you eat your way to better #hearthealth, with doctor-recommended foods and money to buy them. The new research looked at data from nearly 4,000 people, including 1,817 children, from low-income neighborhoods in 12 different states, including California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Minnesota. Participants either had or were at risk of #cardiovascular problems, and were provided with #nutritional classes on healthy eating habits. They were also given money specifically to buy fruits and veggies from grocery stores and farmers markets. The amount of money was about $63 per month on average, but varied by location, and in some cases was based on the number of people per household, ranging from $15 up to $300 (for a large family) per month. Participants stayed on the programs for an average of six months. In that time, they reported eating more fruits and veggies: about a quarter cup more per day for children, and nearly one cup more per day for adults. Food prescriptions also significantly improved measures of heart health like blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and body mass index, according to the study results, published August 29 in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.

📢 Last week, I attended the 91st Annual Meeting of the New Jersey Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. This event covered a variety of eye-opening hot topics including optimizing nutrition and food education in the first five years of life, the mechanisms of allergic reactions to foods, how to best eat to handle stress, the unique roles of both plant- and animal-sourced foods for planetary health and novel therapies for obesity management and metabolism. Key takeaways included: 🧠A variety of foods – whether whole, fortified, or packaged – in conjunction with varied eating patterns, can help support optimal growth and development for a young child’s brain, bones, immune system and body. 🌍Eating style is a choice influenced by many factors: personal, ethical and philosophical. Correcting consumer behaviors to encourage nutrient-dense, healthy eating patterns is essential. 🍎🍗 Plant and animal source foods can co-exist and may even be better together. Both plant and animal foods can positively contribute to planetary health; the key is to encourage a balanced diet while taking into account factors like culture, individual preferences, family eating pattern affordability and motivation. 💉Cutting-edge novel therapies to help address a variety of conditions are on the rise, from GLP-1 drugs for obesity management to DNA testing to personalize interventions in autism, fatigue and pain. Perhaps most importantly, the in-person connecting, networking and collaborating was refreshing. Please stop with all the NOISE! The term "food noise" is going around a lot. But what is it? I see a little bit of different variations online, but overall the definition consists of the following ⏩ preoccupation of food ⏩ constant internal dialogue with ourselves to make (usually less healthy) food related decisions ⏩ interfering with other activities of life People that we take care of that are obese say this is a common issue for them. It's not that there stomach is always hungry, but it's that their brain still is telling them that they still want more food. One of the reasons I'm so thrilled to join Public Health Institute as the new president and CEO is because of the organization's long history of working alongside communities to build innovative, sustainable, equitable solutions to public health issues. One recent example: addressing nutrition and food security. PHI’s  Center for Wellness and Nutrition partnered with communities and the Stockton Food Bank to design and launch the Healthy Food Rx program, which provides home-delivered healthy food boxes to low-income people living with diabetes in Stockton, CA—where over half the town's population is diabetic or pre-diabetic. Our recent evaluation found that Healthy Food Rx participants were able to lower A1C levels, better self-manage diabetes, and improve overall diet and food security at 12 months. The program's success demonstrates the power of "food as medicine" prescription kits and provides a potential roadmap for other communities across the country.
