Congratulations to Younghye Song, assistant professor of biomedical engineering in the U of A's College of Engineering! Song has recently been awarded a $2.5 million National Institutes of Health R37 grant from the National Cancer Institute to investigate the role of metabolic rewiring in breast tumor innervation. "This R37 award allows my lab to dive deeper into understanding breast tumor innervation, which has been linked to worse prognosis with higher rates of metastasis," Song said. "We aim to use tissue engineering approaches and resources available at the Arkansas Integrative Metabolic Research Center (AIMRC) to understand better why more nerve fibers are seen in aggressive breast tumors, and how we can use this understanding to develop new therapeutic strategies to curb metastatic progression. In a 2022 publication in the Journal of Molecular Pharmaceutics, researchers from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston), MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and National Cancer Institute (NCI), discuss how Cryo-Fluorescence Tomography (CFT) enhances whole-body imaging to map out the distribution and signal intensity of conjugates while maintaining anatomical context. Researchers accredited CFT for providing high resolution, high sensitivity imaging of MMC(FNIRTag)-TOC and its IR800 counterpart in SSTR2+ and SSTR2- tumors. Discover more today! Dr. Xin Cai's paper, "Lactate Activates the Mitochondrial Electron Transport Chain Independently of Its Metabolism," was selected as one of 20 Editors' Choice papers for 2023 by Molecular Cell! “Lactate is often the most abundant metabolite in the tumor microenvironment and is thought of as a waste product,” Dr. Cai notes. He has identified an unexpected signaling function to the mitochondria that enables cells to survive and proliferate. Excited to share the culmination of my Master's capstone research project, where I explored the fascinating interplay between Vagus Nerve activity and the proliferation of Small Intestine Adenocarcinoma. My findings shed light on potential pathways for targeted therapies and open new avenues for understanding the intricate mechanisms underlying cancer progression.
