Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Economics and the CSAE, Niccolò Meriggi and co-authors have published a study titled, ‘Last-mile Delivery Increases Vaccine Uptake in Sierra Leone’ in which they designed a cost-effective strategy to enhance COVID-19 vaccination rates.   In collaboration with esteemed institutions including the International Growth Centre, University of Oxford, Yale University School of Management, and Wageningen University, alongside policymakers from the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and Concern Worldwide, their research unveils how prioritising accessibility can revolutionise rural vaccinations.    By implementing mobile vaccination sites, this cost-effective model not only achieved the World Health Organization's global target of immunizing 70% of Sierra Leone's adult population against COVID-19 but also holds promise for replication in other countries with similar demographics and infrastructure challenges.   Find out more and access the paper here: https://ow.ly/PNB950QWJKw Centre for the Study of African Economies, University of Oxford

According to UNICEF, Mozambique is one of the ten countries with the highest number of children who have not received any vaccines. In light of this, we collaborated with UNICEF Moçambique to identify the reasons for low vaccine uptake among babies in the country. Data collection was conducted in Portuguese using a virtual interviewer/digital avatar. UNICEF provided us with three questionnaires focused on perceptions of the malaria vaccine and vaccination in general, targeting three participant groups: caregivers, community leaders, and health professionals. Our Artificial Intelligence-based approach to data collection and analysis allowed us to gather insightful data, enabling us to identify some of the economic, cultural, and logistical barriers to vaccine uptake. https://lnkd.in/eePJ2i92

Funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Corona Management Systems is leading the implementation of the DSI projects in Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, and Nigeria. The DSI project is being strategically implemented by country-implementing partners subcontracted by CMS in these countries to address immunisation coverage gaps, zero-dose burden, and equity issues in these countries. The DSI project aims to leverage cash and non-cash incentives, to improve immunisation coverage and timeliness, reduce the burden on zero-dose children, and improve caregiver’s knowledge and attitudes in poor and vulnerable populations. The project will run from 2023 to 2025. Immunisation is one of the most cost-effective public health interventions, saving individuals and communities from vaccine-preventable diseases and preventing over 4 million deaths annually. However, millions of children are still left behind without vaccination. According to the latest WHO/UNICEF Estimates of National Immunisation Coverage (WUENIC), there are still about 20.5 million children missing lifesaving vaccines globally, with 14.3 million having not received any vaccines (zero-dose children). In Africa, several countries face challenges in reaching their vaccination coverage targets and addressing the burden of zero-dose children. In Nigeria, about 2.3 million children do not receive DTP1 annually. In the DRC, 753,000 zero-dose children were identified in 2022, with DTP1 coverage at 81%. In Cameroon, DTP1 coverage went from 76% in 2021 to 75% in 2022, leading to an increase in zero-dose children. Lesotho has about 4,000 zero-dose children. CMS is seeking external evaluator(s) to carry out MEL process monitoring and rigorous evaluations, which may include cluster randomised control trial (CRT) and control before and after (CBA) studies. Just yesterday, Nigeria became the first country to introduce a new 5-in-1 meningitis vaccine! ️ This was announced by the World Health Organization stating that "#Nigeria has taken a giant leap forward in protecting its citizens from meningitis by becoming the first country to introduce a new, lifesaving vaccine." This innovative 5-in-1 vaccine (#Men5CV) offers broader protection against five strains of the meningococcus bacteria, a major cause of meningitis which causes inflammation of the lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Where do you see Europe at the end of the next EU mandate? 🧐🤔 During the last months, I’ve been reflecting on this question. Throughout my 15 years working in the vaccine industry, I’ve seen the profound impact of immunisation and its pivotal role in protecting loved ones and fortifying resilient health systems. The forthcoming mandate presents a unique opportunity to strengthen collaboration between all sectors toward robust immunisation policies. Prioritizing public health prevention and maintaining a holistic life course perspective will be critical in this endeavour. I am optimistic and see a collaborative future ahead. One where Europe continues leads in vaccine innovation, ensuring equitable access and fostering a generation free from vaccine-preventable diseases including measles, polio, cancer and one day, HIV. Established in 2000, Gavi works with governments, international organizations, and the private sector to support vaccination programs. Its mission is to save lives, reduce poverty, and protect the world against the threat of infectious diseases by providing vaccines to those who need them the most. Gavi focuses on supporting routine immunization, strengthening health systems, and accelerating the introduction of new vaccines in low-income countries. 🚀 We need your help to reimagine a new era for immunisation! 🚀 Since taking office Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance on 18 March, our new CEO Dr Nishtar has visited some of Gavi’s most challenged regions, engaged with numerous donors, and collaborated with global partners to lay the groundwork for transformative change. She has now laid out a dynamic future for immunisation with a comprehensive 180-day plan. This plan focuses on 5 key areas: 1️⃣Achieving a successful replenishment campaign for Gavi 6.0 2️⃣Enhancing vaccine delivery through the Country Delivery Initiative 3️⃣Revitalising Gavi’s culture and capacities with AI and organisational improvements 4️⃣Empowering women within Gavi and the communities we serve 5️⃣Reimagining the future of immunisation in an era marked by conflicts, climate change, and resource scarcity I am extremely honoured that she has asked my team to lead on pillar 5: 🌟reimagining the future for immunisation🌟 As we look towards the future, we aim to improve human health and development by increasing routine immunisation levels, tackling outbreaks, and introducing new vaccines such as malaria and HPV vaccines. But how do we do this in a changing world? Immunisation strategies must evolve to address the shifting dynamics of our world. For example, we need to consider: 🌍 Climate Change: environmental changes affect disease patterns, necessitating adaptive vaccination strategies. 🌍 Macroeconomic Shifts: economic fluctuations impact healthcare funding and access, demanding resilient immunisation programs. 🌍 Global Health Threats: emerging diseases and pandemics require agile and responsive immunisation frameworks. 🌍 Conflicts: immunisation in conflict zones needs innovative solutions to reach those most at risk. 🌍 Migration and Displacement: addressing the immunisation needs of mobile and displaced populations is crucial. 🌍 Technological Advances: leveraging AI and digital tools can enhance vaccine tracking, distribution, and outreach. Advances in R&D are resulting in more vaccines and innovative delivery methods, making immunisation more accessible and efficient. 🌍Demographic Changes: growing and aging populations require tailored vaccination approaches. 🌍 Urbanization: rapid urban growth creates new health challenges and opportunities for vaccine distribution. 📢 Now, I really want to hear from you!
