Something I learned very quickly... ...inside the lineman apprenticeship. When the lineman calls down for 6 feet of #4 covered copper solid... He usually doesn't need exactly 6 feet on the dot. A lot of the times, especially in the lineman trade, you don't need "specific" measurements. I was that rookie who busted out the tape measure to cut a 15ft piece of copper... When in reality, I could have just went 2.5 wingspans... Or 3, just to play it safe! Of course there are times when you need a tape measure to terminate primary underground cable or frame a pole to spec. But we find ourselves using our body to get pretty accurate rough measurements! While it takes around 319 days in most states to become a barber -- Nevada stretches that to a whopping 896 days! This is in stark contrast to the more streamlined journeys facing barbers in neighboring states like Arizona, California, Idaho, Oregon, and Utah. In Oregon, barbers can become licensed in 181 days (and for way less 💵💵💵!). So, what's going on in the Silver State? Well, Nevada’s barbers must undergo 1,500 hours of training (more than any other state in the region), complete an 18-month apprenticeship, and pass four exams. We received our Mobile Class Room and it will be covering the Northern Part of New Mexico as part of the Apprentice Readiness Program (ARP) to help rural communities get an introduction to the trades and give them basic skills to enter a State Registered Apprenticeship like ours. Teach the basics sure. But never miss an opportunity to teach up and challenge. Had my doubts on this one but being brave pays off. What you’re looking at here are school children in year 11 undertaking level 2/3 carpentry apprenticeship standard/level work. Great practical work with the inclusion of some technical Mathematics to gain lengths/angles. “Get out of your comfort zone, it’s where I’ve done most of my learning.” “You’re only as strong as your team – make sure you learn about each other.” “It’s been tough, but it’s given everyone a chance to get their ideas out.” “It’s made me realise it’s ok to not know something and it’s ok to ask questions and ask for help.” Just some of the insights shared during the final presentations of Carrs Engineering Group apprentices after completing their programme at our Eskdale centre. These reflections are an example of how learning through adventure pushes boundaries, fosters resilience and builds teamwork. It's a space where failure is embraced as part of the learning process, empowering apprentices to adapt and grow. These skills are not only applicable to work but also to life.
