Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Burnaby, B.C., didn’t have a spectator venue for sports and events until Perkins&Will and Fast + Epp designed a stadium next to the Terry Fox Field (TFF), respecting the existing Lorne Davies Complex (LDC). The stadium’s standout feature is a 900-m2 (9,687-sf) cantilevered mass timber canopy that appears to be suspended in midair. The engineering, fabrication, and installation of the roof structure posed significant challenges due to heavy snow loads at the Burnaby Mountain site, large cross-laminated timber (CLT) soffit panels with integrated systems to form the roof, and tight clearances to the adjacent sports complex. The biggest challenge was to provide stability to the sprawling roof structure with a 16.4 m (54-ft) cantilever. Enormous 22-m (72-ft), 14.33-ton (13-tonne) box girder beams extend 16 m (54 ft) over the stands, supporting the floating roof structure with their high strength. Further, 228-mm (9-in) stainless steel pins and 76-mm (3-in) rods (commonly used in oil rigs) anchor the beams at their tails. Circular columns near the rear end corners provide gravity support. A continuous CLT soffit runs through underneath the steel girders. To affix the wood to the girders, a bearing and washer detail was introduced, with disc spring washers fitting into wooden box flanges. The tapered design of the steel girders allows them to vanish from view, creating the illusion of an exceptionally thin roof when observed from the field. https://lnkd.in/gCbiAjFg

This is completely RIDICULOUS engineering, very very costly and unnecessary on any residential build ! Especially when people can’t afford what’s out there already. Commercial parkades under multi level apartment buildings have 1/2 this amount of rebar detail with only 8” thick concrete walls. Most retaining walls are already supported enough with backfill on both sides for support and do not need this type of ridiculous overkill and cost to go with it. Retaining walls with backfill support on both sides DO NOT need engineering. There is 10x more engineering in this retaining wall than there is in the suppose to be affordable 3 Plex foundation itself. This ridiculousness needs to stop.

Following up on my previous post regarding the benefits of Modular construction of Stadiums/Arenas. Occasionally, you see builders attempt jobs like the ones pictured with cantilevers as the predominant support. Tools with 340kg SWL are being overloaded on jobs like this. They were designed in the 80s to support walls above *small* door/window openings hence their low SWL. Creating 21st open plan living requires needle support i.e both skins of wall *must* have 100% support that is supported equally and evenly from both sides. Anything less than 100% and structural integrity is lost. Great to see another home in Bromley getting the professional treatment this time from BCG Building And Construction Services on this big open plan extension with Prop Pal Plus in action and get the steels in nice and smoothly. Excellent progress. Only professional builders with sound structural engineering knowledge will understand and appreciate the exceptional standards from these builders here. Excellent preparation and knockout done with a nice tidy site to go with it. Yes, they could’ve used the traditional methods of RSJs/box section needles but why would professional builders carry on working the old way when they know of a far superior tool that’s a game changer for setting all important safety standards AND working smarter? BCG know exactly what they’re doing and know exactly what their kit they’re using is capable of. The difference between Prop Pal V traditional methods of needling with RSJs / box and C sections: RSJ / box and C section needles ❌ no certified SWL to guarantee they take the load above which varies from house to house ❌ when supporting walls above floor joists, extra mess and damage to upstairs room due to having to cut holes or take floorboards up OR you do like I did and would find scraps of odds and ends to pack it up which is time consuming and scrappy ❌ can’t be secured to acrow props which leaves an unsafe and not secure site for *anyone* on site ❌ dimensions of RSJ needles means extra brickwork has to be removed ❌ makeshift by sight, makeshift by method The Prop Pal Needle System (both models) ✅ certified SWL of 1050kg - tested with jacking screw plate in use ✅ jacking screw plate means no holes have to be cut through flooring saving on time, work and money (acrow prop supports floor joists from underneath) ✅ acrow props lock securely into one or both ends of the Prop Pal needle meaning a safe and secure site for everyone ✅ dimensions allows them to slot easily through the aperture of 1 metric brick means the bare minimum of putting the brickwork back ✅ looks professional and IS professional. If the home isn’t having a flush ceiling and you don’t need to use the jacking screw plate, acrow props can lock in securely at BOTH ends of the Prop Pal needle. A month ago, we had the pleasure of having the talented crew from LCM Media on the Tishman Speyer UK Angel Square project to capture some of the fantastic work being produced by our site team. 🎥 📸 This project is our eighth structural alterations project and our fourth project for our client, McLaren Construction Group, and is by far the largest, most complex, and challenging to date. The project is located within the London Borough of Islington and originally comprised three separate blocks sharing a common structure around a central external courtyard and a shared basement. The building interfaces with the Angel London Underground station ticket hall and escalator bank, which descend through the basement of the building. Upon completion, the project will create an exemplar building of contemporary architecture with high environmental aspirations, delivering significantly improved office accommodation to this part of London. 🏢 As part of our package, we will have carried out the following works upon completion: 1. Partial demolition of the existing building 2. Construction of a new reinforced concrete raft slab 3. Installation of underground drainage 4. Waterproofing installation 5. Construction of new reinforced concrete cores 6. Reconstruction of columns and slabs (including the infill of the central courtyard area) 7. Encasement of existing columns 8. One-way slabs and two-way slabs are types of slabs used in building construction, and they differ mainly in the way they transfer loads and are supported. One-Way Slab: - Spans in one direction only. - The main reinforcement is placed parallel to the shorter side. - Supported by beams on two opposite sides only. - Bending moment occurs in one direction (perpendicular to the supports). - The ratio of the longer span to the shorter span (l_y/l_x) is equal to or greater than 2. - Economical for spans up to about 3.5 meters. - Example applications include cantilever slabs and verandahs. Two-Way Slab: - Spans in two perpendicular directions. - The main reinforcement is placed in both directions. - Supported by beams on all four sides. - Bending moments are distributed in both directions. - The ratio of the longer span to the shorter span (l_y/l_x) is less than 2. - Suitable for larger spans and higher loads, more economical for spans around 6m x 6m. - The deflected shape is dish or saucer-like. The choice between one-way and two-way slabs depends on the specific design requirements, span lengths, and load conditions of the structure
