𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐇 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 29 𝑴𝒂𝒚 - 18 𝑱𝒖𝒏𝒆 2022 𝑯𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒊 𝑴𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒂𝒐𝒖𝒅, 𝑶𝒖𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒍𝒂, 𝑨𝒍𝒈𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒂 I am excited to share my recent experience as an intern with the 𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐇 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, where I had the opportunity to deepen my knowledge in the critical area of Drill Stem Testing (DST). During this internship, I was able to: 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝐃𝐒𝐓): Immerse myself in the entire DST process, from equipment setup to execution. I gained hands-on experience in configuring DST tools, monitoring well conditions, and executing pressure tests. My work involved analyzing build-up data and interpreting pressure charts to assess reservoir characteristics and potential productivity. This internship was a transformative experience that provided me with practical skills and a deeper understanding of 𝐃𝐒𝐓 as a key method in well evaluation and reservoir analysis. The Subsurface Task Force’s 2023 report ‘Geoscience Skills in Crisis’ highlights the collapse in geoscience education and consequent challenges in attracting and retaining geoscientists to help achieve UK net zero targets.    The Management Summary and Call for Action linked below is aimed at energy sector companies employing geoscientists, from small consultancies and service companies through to integrated energy companies, renewables companies and beyond. It summarises the skills challenges and identifies actions that companies can take to anticipate skills shortages and encourage students into geoscience education and employment.    Concerted action from stakeholders in academia and industries will be needed, but the Call for Action focusses on inititives which companies can adopt right now to help develop a future geoscience workforce.    To make it easier, the Task Force has published an info pack to help companies and their staff run successful internship programmes, get involved in mentoring, and undertake outreach for geoscience and the energy sector.   Please help us to promote this Call for Action and the info pack to the widest audience of movers and shakers in companies employing geoscientists by sharing this post to your network!    Management Summary and Call for Action: https://lnkd.in/gqWcAjf3

Geoscience is key to our energy future and achieving net zero -are we doing enough to attract, develop and retain our vital geoscience professionals? It’s a growing concern and the UK’s ability to underpin our new energy and net zero solutions, including carbon capture & storage (CCS) and renewables, is intrinsically linked to this profession. We simply will not have access to the skilled geoscientists to succeed in our carbon reduction ambitions unless we step up our efforts. A useful report from the Subsurface Task Force highlighting the issues and how companies can help.

I’m excited to share that I’ve officially started my internship OGDCL Official, and it’s been an incredible first week! Being part of this leading organization has already proven to be a transformative experience, packed with hands-on training, learning opportunities, and exposure to real-world industry practices. From day one, I’ve been immersed in various labs, exploring testing techniques, and understanding the processes that drive the industry. The support and guidance from the professionals around me have been inspiring and motivating. In my first week: 🔬 Analytical Lab: I worked on testing water samples, learning about the various techniques and processes involved in ensuring accurate results and determine their drinkability, diving into the methods used to assess water quality and ensure safety for consumption.This experience gave me a deeper understanding of the analytical methods used in the industry. 🛢️ Rock Eval Techniques: I explored Rock Eval analysis, which plays a crucial role in petroleum geology by evaluating the hydrocarbon potential of rock samples. It was fascinating to see how these techniques contribute to exploration and production. 🏗️ Cement Lab Introduction: I also got introduced to the Cement Lab, focusing on drilling cement and its crucial role in maintaining well integrity during drilling operations. I am looking forward to learn more and expand my skills in the coming weeks. The Geoscience talent pipeline has flow assurance issues. If we truly care about domain science, then we better heed the warning and act. There can be no subsurface data science without them. “Geology and statistics are the two inseparable sides of the same coin” Danie Krige.

We are seeing the same thing in Australia. The aging work force and low levels of new entrants to our industry in the past 8 years or so is going to cause significant staffing challenges in the coming years. I’d apply the same observation to Petroleum Engineering.
