About us

The Institute of Petroleum and Energy Studies (IPES) is a leading postgraduate institution established in 2003. It is a collaboration between IFP School, France and the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. We offer a range of industry-relevant and professionally certified postgraduate programs in Petroleum, Energy Studies and Project Development designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills to succeed in the energy sector. Our programs are designed to develop professional engineers with a high level of competency in various fields such as drilling, reservoir engineering, well production, process, and energy studies, with a focus on sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint of energy projects. Our multidisciplinary approach equips graduates with the ability to join and lead teams in oil and gas field development and management, as well as emerging energy sectors. Operating under the aegis of the Centre for Oil and Gas Technology, IPS is sponsored by TotalEnergies Nigeria Limited and NNPC Joint Venture. We promote international and national academic collaborations and linkages, partnerships with industry, and collaboration with national and international professional bodies. Our healthy relationship between town and gown makes it possible for the industry and professional bodies to be actively involved in driving the program life-cycle of curriculum development to course delivery/joint project supervision. At IPS, we foster a culture of safety, sustainability, and excellence. We aim to equip our graduates with the knowledge and skills to succeed in the ever-evolving energy industry while promoting sustainable and responsible energy practices.

  • We are pleased to extend a warm welcome to Ange NDOUDI, PhD, Engr., PE who joined us last week from IFP Training, where he has been a full-time Senior Lecturer since July 2020. His vast experience, spanning 27 years in both lecturing and oil & gas field operations, makes him a tremendous asset to our institute and our MSc students. This week, Dr. N'DOUDI continues his lecture series on Terminals and Receiving Facilities, building upon the Introduction to Offshore Production System course he began last week. His courses will provide our MSc students with invaluable knowledge and hands-on understanding, equipping them with the skills needed to excel in the energy sector. Dr. N'DOUDI's career highlights include his extensive work with TotalEnergies from July 1997 to June 2020. During this time, he held several key positions, including Onshore Installation Manager at Djeno Oil Terminal (Congo), Offshore Installation Manager at Nkossa Floating Production Unit (Congo), and Manager for Shutdown and Turnaround Works at Bloc 17 (Angola). His expertise also extends to Nigeria, where he served as Deputy Maintenance Manager, and to France and Korea, where he was ICSS Leader and Deputy Commissioning Manager for the Moho project. His specific skills encompass automatic control, mobile robotics, field operations, HSE, and instrumentation & process control. The IPES community are excited about the wealth of knowledge and expertise Dr. N'DOUDI brings. His background in maintenance, shutdowns, turnarounds, and instrumentation & process control will enrich the academic environment and help our students gain practical insights into the complex challenges of the oil and gas industry.   • We are honoured to welcome Professor Wumi Iledare, a distinguished Professor Emeritus of the Louisiana State University, USA, to the Institute of Petroleum and Energy Studies (IPES). Professor Iledare commenced his lectures on Petroleum Economics for our MSc students on Tuesday, 13th August 2024, marking the beginning of an invaluable academic journey for our institute. With over twenty-five years of extensive experience in the oil and gas industry, both in practice and research, Professor Iledare brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our institution. He is not only a renowned scholar in Petroleum Economics and Policy Research but also holds leadership roles as the Director of the Energy Information Division at the Center for Energy Studies. Additionally, he serves as a Visiting Professor of Petroleum Economics at the Institute of Petroleum and Energy Studies (IPES), University of Port Harcourt, and the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, Nigeria. Professor Iledare’s academic credentials are impressive, including a B.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Ibadan, an M.S. in Energy Resources from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Ph.D. in Mineral and Energy Resource Economics from West Virginia University. His dedication to the field is further evidenced by his leadership positions, including serving as President of the United States Association for Energy Economics (USAEE) in 2008 and President-elect of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE) in 2013. His contributions to the industry have been recognized with numerous awards, such as the Distinguished Fellow of the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics, the #SPE African Region Award, and the #USAEE Senior Fellow Award, among others. We are confident that Professor Iledare's presence at IPES will inspire our students and contribute significantly to their academic and professional growth. In line with this mission, we are excited to welcome Solomon Owonam, who joined us this week to teach our MSc students about Production Operations and Production Equipment Design. Solomon is the esteemed Training Manager at IFP School and brings with him a wealth of experience from his distinguished career in the energy sector. He led the Production Operations at Total E&P Nigeria Ltd. In this role, he was responsible for start-ups, full field shutdowns, major plant interventions, and the operation of deep-water production topsides and hull processes. His expertise extends to overseeing systems such as Crude Oil and Gas Processing systems, Water Treatment Processes, Gas Injection and Export. Also, operations on the Subsea Umbilicals and Cantinery Risers, Chemicals Injection management, TEG Dehydration process, Crude Oil Storage Facilities, Crude Oil Lifting and Metering, Dead oil recirculation for hydrate formation prevention in subsea production loops, methanol injection for hydrate formation inhibition, Wells Flowlines and Risers (WFR) control systems, Overall Control of Wells and Risers (OCWR) systems, etc. In addition to his technical prowess, Solomon has demonstrated a strong commitment to safety and health as he was appointed Head of HSE Oml 100, this was after followed by his appointment as the Safety Coordinator for Field Operations at Total E&P Nigeria Ltd. His responsibilities included coordinating HSE activities and interventions across all field locations, preparing and presenting personnel safety inductions, leading and participating in Job Risk Assessments (JRAs) for projects and interventions, conducting Cause Tree Analysis, monitoring field personnel safety training compliance, preparing Bridging documents for third-party intervention activities such as Drilling and Production Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS). Also, performing technical evaluations for HSE department contracts, and ensuring the provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and HSE consumables for all field personnel. Solomon's lectures emphasize practical applications of course concepts, offering students valuable insights into production operations and equipment design. His real-world experience and industry expertise will provide our students with essential knowledge and skills for their careers. We warmly welcome Engr.   • We are delighted to announce Engr. Franck Egbon, the General Manager of Talent Management at TotalEnergies, as the lecturer for the week. He would take the MSc class on 5-day lecture on Offshore Drilling Operations and its Challenges. Engr. Egbon brings over 32 years of diverse experience in the Oil and Gas industry, specializing in Well Engineering. His extensive background encompasses drilling, reservoir, and production engineering/technology, alongside a foundational knowledge of geology. His versatility and expertise make him an invaluable addition to our teaching staff. In his current role at TotalEnergies, Engr. Egbon excels in human resources and talent management. He develops strategic plans to optimize productivity and continuously reviews and improves organizational effectiveness. His dedication to creating a highly motivated work environment with innovative approaches to improvement are key attributes that he will undoubtedly impart on our students. Engr. Egbon is renowned for his ability to work effectively in multicultural and multi-ethnic environments. His experience in recruiting, both locally and internationally for Total SA Nigeria, and his wide-ranging experience in people and career management make him a mentor and trainer par excellence. He is actively involved with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) International as a mentor, further highlighting his commitment to nurturing young talent in the industry. Academically, Engr. Egbon holds an MSc degree from the prestigious French Petroleum Institute (IFP) School in Paris. He also lectures at the Nelson Mandela Institute/World Bank University - African University of Science and Technology (AUST) and at the Offshore Technology Institute (OTI)-University of Port Harcourt. As a lecturer with Total Professeurs Associés (TPA), Engr. Egbon helps build bridges between the oil industry and the academic circles, delivering technical and business-related presentations. Beyond his professional and academic accomplishments, Engr. Egbon is an environmentalist and the founder of the "One-Bottle-Club." His specialties include people management, well engineering, lecturing, recruitment, training, mentoring, coaching, and career management. One of the most compelling aspects of Engr. Egbon's lectures is his emphasis on the practical application of course concepts.   • We are excited to announce that our MSc Coordinator, Dr. Femi Oyedokun, is currently delivering an advanced lecture on Directional Drilling. His extensive expertise in geomechanics, engineering science, scientific computing, and data science is clearly reflected in both the content and quality of his course delivery. Dr. Femi Oyedokun brings a wealth of experience to the course. As the former Project Manager of the IFP Training school France and holding a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University, his industry insights and academic background enrich the learning experience. His history of conducting groundbreaking research in petroleum engineering and developing scientific solutions in drilling, reservoir management, production, machine learning, petrophysics, and geomechanics offers students valuable new perspectives. Our students are actively engaged in this ongoing course through hands-on activities and real-world examples, making the learning process both practical and informative. Dr. Francis brought a wealth of experience as an Offshore Project Coordinator and NOA Wells specialist, with a notable history in the oil and energy industry. His proficiency spans Workover, Gas, Petroleum, Directional Drilling, and Product Optimization. He holds a Ph.D. in Drilling Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt, underscoring his strong foundation in the field's academic and practical aspects. Dr. Nweke's class was designed to be practical and engaging, demystifying the complexities of well control and applying the kill sheet to record information and conduct calculations about killing a kick or impending uncontrolled release of hydrocarbons.
