From June 1st to November 30th, we enter 'Hurricane Season,' a period when 97% of Atlantic tropical cyclones typically form. This year, the first named storm on June 1st, 2024, was Alberto. The season's peak usually occurs from mid-August to mid-October. On average, we can expect 11-15 named storms, 4-8 hurricanes, and 1-3 major hurricanes, with 2-4 likely to impact the United States directly. The number of named storms or #hurricanes in the Atlantic falls within the bounds of the #NOAA's August seasonal forecast in only 50-60% of cases. However, with September 10 as the climatological peak of the season rapidly approaching, we've only seen 5 named storms, well below the expectations set by virtually all projections. While the most aggressive #forecasts are now unlikely to materialize, a lot can still happen in the following months, as factors that suppressed the activity in recent weeks are expected to potentially subside in the second half of the month and all the factors that spoke in favor of hyperactivity still remain in place. For example, 13 named storms emerged after September 10 in 2020, 11 in 2005 or 2019. Nine hurricanes appeared after the seasonal peak in 2010 and 2020.

𝙏𝙍𝙊𝙋𝙄𝘾𝙎 𝙐𝙋𝘿𝘼𝙏𝙀 - All eyes will be on the eastern Gulf of Mexico throughout the work week as a cluster of showers and thunderstorms currently in the northwest Caribbean Sea rapidly develop from a no-named storm to Tropical Storm and then eventually Hurricane Helene. While the exact landfall location and intensity at landfall remain uncertain, the models have honed in on the Florida Gulf Coast between the Florida-Alabama border and the Big Bend Region late Thursday or early Friday morning, likely as a Category 2 or 3 hurricane. We'll continue to keep a watchful eye on the development of this tropical cyclone over the next few days with updates on model trends. #helene #tropicalstormhelene #hurricanehelene #florida #hurricaneseason2024 #hurricaneseason #hurricane #tropics #tropicalstorm #atlantic #atlanticbasin
