Why Volunteering Matters: Helping Young People Build Transferable Skills✌️ A few days ago, I encouraged my 14-year-old niece to start volunteering, and for some parents, this might be hard to accept. They may ask, "Why should they work for no money?" "Will it actually help them since it's not a real job?" Let me explain it in simple terms. When teens volunteer, they’re not just helping others—they’re also helping themselves. 🤝 Volunteering teaches them transferable skills—skills that can be used in any job or situation.👏 Here are a few examples: 1️⃣ Teamwork: Working with others to achieve a common goal. 2️⃣ Communication: Learning how to talk to people and share ideas clearly. 3️⃣ Time Management: Balancing different tasks and being responsible. 4️⃣ Problem-Solving: Figuring out solutions when challenges arise. These skills aren’t just for work; they’re valuable in everyday life too. By volunteering, young people get real-world experience that helps them grow, both personally and professionally. We get it, volunteering is not for everyone, having a job is enough work, but it’s definitely for us. Just thinking out loud… We should always just jump at the opportunity of Volunteering and Interning. Whether we like it or not, these things build us and teach us the power of endurance. To be honest, I have had my own share of unpleasant moments volunteering but instead of tearing me down, I just feel the need to you know aim higher telling myself I won’t treat people badly if they ever find themselves under me. I believe these lessons gives us opportunity to be better no matter what. Fine, you are volunteering right now, working so hard with little or no pay. Your driving force should be that it won’t always be forever, you have the power to continue and train yourself along the line or you just walk. Volunteering is for us, it is personal. You don’t need an opportunity, reach out to that organization, that person, that brand, that company. Business owners, Treat your Volunteers well! P.S. I had interesting conversation with a friend about investments he have had to make in order to pursue the career of his choice. It got me pondering, if you ever think you are stuck or can´t fully show your talent at work, why don´t you go for volunteering? Field of volunteering is vast and there your talent is always valued and needed. You even can select the cause. ✨ I´m celebrating 20 years volunteering anniversary this year. ✨ I started first as a peer support person for the young and later as a Finnish Kennel Club´s District Instructor responsible to coach, lecture, and train hundreds of enthusiastic dog hobbyist every year. Although, all I wanted initially to do good, it has also been a catalyst for personal growth and career development. By doing something you feel passionate about, volunteering gives you an opportunity to develop your skills simultaneously. For example, volunteering as peer support cultivated essential soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and empathy. A foundation or at least a starting point for professional success and skill set required from modern professionals or leaders. Depending on your volunteering position, it can have benefits that you might not even think about. For example, after 11 years of District Trainer experience, I can also say that I feel comfortable speaking in public to large audiences. That´s something I was not able to say before and I do not think that I would have access to such experience in legal career path from such an early stage. On a personal level, volunteering can foster a sense of purpose and fulfillment. It can also provide a platform for networking and expanding one's social circle within people like-minded. Potentially it can open doors to unexpected opportunities as most likely you will be learning new things while doing something you are invested in. Like me a while ago, when I found myself sitting in an auditorium with hundreds of others volunteer workers listening a professional Strategy- and Communications Consultant Salla Saarinen, Radical Soul´s presentation on Branding. RE: The Benefits Beyond Volunteering🌹🌹🌹 By now, most of my followers on social media would have known that I have been actively volunteering in The Astronauts Collective (TAC). I did my last count on the number of times I volunteered since 16 July 2022, and the magic number is...15 as of 01 Feb 2024. Yi Fong WONG, The Co-founder has promised to give me a "medal" when I hit the 20th time volunteering with them. I am looking forward to such defining moment! On my maiden volunteering in 2024, I stepped out of my comfort zone (Woodlands) to the next neighbourhood- The exciting Yishun. I volunteered as a Career Human Library and had students coming to me asking me questions about life as an author. I contextualised my sharing to focus on the benefits of writing eg journalling, self-expression, reflections, etc. What I wanted to do was to share as much as I could to each group of up to 5 students in 15 minutes. Little did I know that someone else was watching me from a distance. Before leaving the school, I was approached by a Education & Career Counsellor. We connected immediately because we both share the same surname- Chew. She found my sharing with the students very engaging and she asked if I could consider speaking amongst the students when she run such events. As an educator by heart, my answer was an resounding Yes as long as my schedule fits. I left my mobile no for her to reach me. Yesterday afternoon, I received a whatsapped text from her! We chatted as she elaborated on the coming session on 04 Mar 2024. Thankfully I was able to make it for an 1-hour talk on 04 Mar 2024. Initially, I was scheduled for a business trip over the same period but decided to postpone it to end Mar instead. As the timeline to the event was short, I decided to quickly send her the needful requirements so that she could liaise with all parties involved concerning the 04 Mar talk. Indeed, when we are caught in doing something we love, we will never know who are there observing us and what opportunity unimagined arises as a result! #authorforgood #VolunteerForGood
