Most of you know that I volunteer as the Vice Chair of the Board for the Horizons at The Foote School program in New Haven, CT which is an immersive academic and enrichment program serving over 160 New Haven Public Students (grades K-8 with a newer High School Mentorship Program to reach the 9-12 kiddos as well) each year with year-round programming that is anchored around its robust summer component. We are a largely privately funded program that provides this opportunity free of charge to families and if you are looking for ways to help advance equity in education, see our support page for ways you can help us with our work: https://lnkd.in/eFskdnb7 Today, I had the privilege of not only presenting but seeing the fruits of my organizing a special panel of friends for our “Career Day Chat” for the middle school class. With the help of my friends Elijah Hampton, James Williams, Willie Henriquez, and Jordan Blatche, among the five of us, we presented a multifaceted group of professionals who are business owners, musicians, real estate investors, accountants, serial entrepreneurs, correctional officers, and attorneys for career day. These gentlemen showed up in such a real way and listening to them speak I only became more inspired and grateful to have these guys in my circle. The tough middle school crowd loved them as we shared jokes and laughs and thoughtful and engaging follow-up questions. Such a special moment was shared today, and I’m just moved to have been able to witness it. So much was talked about but some of the messages we shared were: - “You are only as good as the company you keep.” - “Model what you need.” - “Mistakes will happen, but do your best to not make the mistakes that you can’t make a comeback from.” - “Ask for help and seek mentorship.” - “Make a covenant to be the best version of yourself that you can be.” - “There is more than one way to be successful. With that, school may not be the path for you, but all of us need to develop a game plan for success.” - “Shutup and work – not everything you must do you will like.” #TeamDestined4Greatness 🙌🏾

This month, Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia celebrated with ribbon-cutting events at our Richmond and Hampton support centers. Our events were honored by the presence of CEO Mark A. For many years now, I’ve noticed that working to improve, invest in, or (oddly) defend public education brings out the best in people. It’s a never-ending, ever-widening labor of love for young people, communities, and the idea of a functioning, or better yet, a vibrant democracy. Sometimes it’s hard to see an immediate, real-world impact, especially if you don’t work in the classroom or regularly visit schools (miss the good old days). But whether it's educators inspiring students and anchoring communities, advocates making sure the system works for everyone, or innovators of all types bringing new ideas forward, supporting the promise of a great education can be our best and most tangible expression of compassion, justice, and hope for the future. And I don’t think there’s ever been a time when we’ve needed more of that collective, teetering on existential, hope. I feel incredibly lucky to still be fighting the good fight, now with the brilliant team of education dreamers, believers, and storytellers at FINN Partners—a few months in already. Together, we’re showing that when we work in service of education from the many vantage points and undertakings our clients bring, we elevate not only educational progress and ideas but also each other. Wow. 8 years ago today, a young Daniel with butterflies in his stomach moved onto campus at the University of the Cumberlands. His heart was tense as he wondered what to expect and whether he would enjoy the new sensation. Before he knew it, young Daniel met some of the most incredible people in my life who significantly impacted me. Before he knew it, young Daniel was involved with groups and departments throughout campus that significantly impacted his future, including being the college mascot—Pete the Patriot! Some tips from my experience as a college alum and former college mascot: 1. Actively participate in extracurricular activities and take advantage of opportunities, but only a few simultaneously. 2. Seek help before a problem emerges. 3. Feel free to drop a class. 4. Stay healthy. Eat healthy and find the time to exercise. Doing so will help you more than you know. 5. Cultivate friendships with a small group of others you connect well with—it's easy to be friends with everyone on campus (especially if you or you build your way up to becoming an extrovert). Usually, your friend group gets smaller after college, and you become very closely connected with those few friends with whom you initially connected well (mine live in Knoxville, and I talk to them almost daily!). 6. Most importantly - think of your education as giving you skills that will help you make a positive mark on this world. I am thinking about all of the first-year students and all college students who are continuing their education this month. These are our emerging leaders who will make an impact on the world.
