📌 Do you agree that today's students struggle to advocate for their beliefs effectively? Instead of resorting to insults, isolating opponents, or irrational arguments, students need to practice making logical, constructive arguments in support of their ideas. That's exactly why universities need cultures of open inquiry and viewpoint diversity. 👩🏫 Our HxA member Mary Kate Cary is an adjunct professor at the University of Virginia who believes in providing her students with a learning environment that helps them develop mature, productive argumentation strategies. Making space for discovering new possibilities and perspectives is what our HxA members are all about. #psychologyquotes #educationquotes #educatorsofinstagram #philosophyquotes #mindfulnesspractice #selfcensorship #censorship #teachersofinsta #valuesbasedliving #creativityquotes

White male, cis/het dominant culture privileges a focus on intellect only. In the rigidness of what it demands, we are socialized to suppress and repress emotions and dismiss the expression of emotions in public spaces. This National #SEL Week, we name again that is on all of us in #education who value cultural responsiveness to normalize emotional experiences as part of what it means to be human and to tend to the well-being of all our students. Read more on what Dr. Shawn Ginwright, founder of Flourish Agenda, Inc. and professor of education at San Francisco State University, shares on #SEL practices and how they support a healing-centered schoolwide learning environment: https://lnkd.in/ejCa6Vvs via KQED #socialemotionallearning #learningandevelopment

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the impact of our conscious and unconscious biases. It’s fascinating how these biases shape our understanding and actions, often without us even realizing it. Association of College and University Educators (ACUE)’s module delves into this very topic, exploring how our assumptions can affect our interactions with others. One key takeaway for me has been the importance of self-reflection. By examining our own identities and implicit biases, we can start to see how they influence our behavior. Adopting an asset-based mindset means seeing the potential in everyone and everything, and using that perspective to drive positive change and growth. In case you have not heard it, your potential is limitless. Keep pushing forward. #ACUE #choosejoy #inclusiveeducation #HigherEd #professionaldevelopment

In this short 15m presentation Daniel Willingham, Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia talks to the class of 24 at UVA. Daniel clarifies the difference between formal learning that takes place at school or university and leads to mastery, and #lifelonglearning, a term often used as a dumping ground for any learning undertaken after school. But don’t let me put you off with a somewhat dull observation, this is an #insightful and #educationally profound talk that explains how the brain is designed to learn, not how it adapts to learn, an area in which Daniel has considerable expertise. Far be it from me to suggest a title for his talk but I would have called it - "Lessons from preschool for post school" how learning really works. In short, his four tips are: • Enjoy new experiences, enjoy exploration • Curate your environment to develop curiosity • Tweak existing habits that fit with the ones you want to develop • Make learning a value (Family) Just to be clear - this is not a criticism of the education system or the best way to study but a distinction between learning in a formal/structured world verses the real one. #Teaching #Brainscience #Education

Truth, Beauty, and Goodness are not isolated concepts but interwoven aspects of a unified potentiality. Truth provides orientation through structural coupling—certainty grounded in context. Beauty reflects the truth of self-regulation, revealing harmony in the world of life. Goodness represents the emancipatory potential of the individual subject towards intersubjectivity, enabling moral growth. In reclaiming Beauty, particularly within education, we don’t just enrich aesthetics—we create a holistic framework that complements the search for Truth and fosters ethical, meaningful development. #TruthBeautyGoodness #HolisticEducation #EthicsAndAesthetics #SelfRegulation #CreativePotential #StructuralCoupling #PhilosophyOfEducation

An eye-opening reminder regarding the influence of others' expectations and an important directive for all educators. Students' school experiences are fundamentally shaped by teachers with lasting impacts beyond the classroom. Limitations may not only relate to skill-development and life-pathways but influence an individual's self-belief, future educational interactions and peer relationships (Turetsky et al., 2021, https://lnkd.in/gwvKT8nF.). So...assume potential and expect success. https://lnkd.in/g6WUKyV7
SMALL on Instagram: "Our negative assumptions about people with Down syndrome can lead us to treat them in such a way that these assumptions become reality. In sociology, this is called a ‘self-fulfilling prophecy’. Why not reverse our perspectives? If we have positive assumptions about people with Down syndrome, we’ll give them more opportunities in their schools, workplaces, relationships and ac

EMEA Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging Program Manager @NVIDIA | HR Lecturer | Keynote Speaker on how Philosophy and Neuroscience can foster wellbeing and inclusive culture
Yesterday, I graduated in Applied Neuroscience from King's College, and three thoughts stand out to me. - It's a privilege to be able to engage in lifelong learning within a high-quality academic environment, and I deeply appreciate this opportunity. When we talk about inclusion and diversity, we frequently address gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, neurodiversity but we tend to overlook the bias related to one's background. This factor plays a significant role in shaping our perspectives and experiences, and it's crucial to acknowledge and address it in our conversations about diversity and inclusion. There was a time when I believed that having a degree was the sole indicator of being well-educated. However, I've learned that this isn't necessarily true. I've met many people without degrees who are incredibly knowledgeable and skilled, sometimes even more so than those with formal education. - The joy of learning and creating new neural connections in my brain while engaging with new ideas remains one of the best experiences in life for me. I hope I will be able to do so for as long as I live in this world. - The importance of having a supportive group and a loving family is another privilege that goes way beyond the joy of studying or achieving anything. It is some magic thing I couldn't do without and I am extremely grateful for this. Fourth reflection (bonus one): well done to me. We often spend so much time being modest, doubtful, and critical, and while these traits have their value, sometimes it's just right to say "well done" to oneself. This is one of those times. #LifelongLearning #AcademicExcellence #InclusionMatters #DiversityInEducation #BeyondTheDegree #EducationalPrivilege #BackgroundBias #InclusiveAcademia #EducationForAll

Parent to a College Student | Tandean Rustandy Esteemed Endowed Chair, University of Colorado-Boulder | TUM Ambassador | Professor, Alliance Manchester Business School
Too often my feed has been filled with chest beating and bullying this last week or so. It has reminded me of the importance of surrounding yourself with kindness and supportive colleagues. It makes such a difference when the people around you are committed to doing things mindfully and ethically. Only then can you find happiness in academic life. So. Since academics pick who we collaborate with and who we interact with. Take care to make good choices and lay the foundation for a happier academic life. And. Do not suffer fools, for they can undo years of investing in clarity and thought. Only then will you find peace in academic life. #academiclife #integrity
