At Center for Community Transitions we are grateful for #reentryhousing partners like Freedom Fighting Missionaries and Housing Collaborative who provide a critical direct service to our program graduates and residents preparing for release from our Center for Women residential work release program. Short-term solutions solve transactions, while compensated long-term solutions bolster pathways to #desistance and ultimately #economicmobility. "Housing needs during the #reentry process generally include both a short- and a long-term component. Time limited interventions such as short-term rental assistance or #transitionalhousing help meet immediate needs for safety and stability after release, while long-term resources, such as permanent supportive housing or other subsidized housing, help ensure ultimate success in the reentry process. As noted earlier, many DOCs do not typically include within their mission to provide long-term housing assistance, and the budgetary demands to do so can be significant. Therefore, strong housing system partnerships are critical to help ensure long-term or permanent housing is attainable on a state or community level."

At Union, fully one-third of our work is devoted to designing high-quality affordable homes. We don’t think about affordable housing as a distinct thing that goes ‘over there'. We focus on making complete and dignified places and homes for everyone. Housing is a statewide concern in Oregon — in every county respondents to the Oregon Voices survey project shared with us their struggles securing stable, affordable housing. In fact, so many Oregonians voiced concerns about housing through the #OregonVoices survey that the research team decided to focus their analysis on the topic for the first Oregon Voices research brief. This brief summarizes what people shared about housing affordability, supply, quality and access. Safe and stable housing is a precursor to success for individuals and communities. Affordable housing is not limited to housing only for the very poorest citizens, nor should it carry any stigma. Affordable housing is ANY privately owned, quality housing that costs 30% or less of that household’s income. In greater Savannah, for example, this often means that households earning $58,400 or less annually struggle to find housing that they can afford.    We believe that everyone, no matter their income, should have access to housing that is both desirable and affordable, ensuring that individuals and families can enjoy a decent quality of life without being burdened by housing costs. The provincial government of British Columbia is allocating $51 million to assist municipal and regional governments in aligning their bylaws and policies with new legislative requirements related to housing. The funding will aid in updating Housing Needs reports, zoning bylaws, development cost charges, community amenity cost charge bylaws, and community plans, with a focus on transit-oriented development and small-scale, multi-unit housing on single-family lots. A total of 188 local governments, including 160 municipal governments and 28 regional districts, will receive grants based on a flat funding amount and per-capita calculations. How local is the 'local' community? (*Spoiler alert* - it's bigger than you think) I was going through a client's old Statement of Community Involvement the other day (yes, I have all the fun). I looked at the consultation map. It happened in no more than a few streets immediately next to the site. That was it. Fair enough, you might think. These are the people the 'most' affected. BUT, hang on..... This was a scheme that potentially benefitted a much larger area. Easily the whole borough and arguably neighbouring boroughs too. So why should the 'community' engagement be limited to such a small area? Do the voices of those who live more than three streets away not count? Surely, the community is *everyone* who lives in the local authority area. Because the new housing/jobs/infrastructure proposed is for the whole area, not just the adjacent streets. So whenever you're next told; "the community doesn't like this" ask yourself who the 'community' really is. The small number of immediate neighbours, or the wider, actual community? Speaking to the latter as well as the former is not only advantageous, but a much truer reflection of real opinion - enabling councillors to make a better decision. A recent UCL study commissioned by the Rural Housing Network revealed some insights into the under-used potential of Rural Exception Sites, which were established in 1991.
