Today is #WorldHumanitarianDay on which we honor the humanitarian personnel who have lost their lives implementing humanitarian action. We also mark one week from commemorating the 75th anniversary of the #GenevaConventions which are crucial in providing protection and safety to humanitarian workers. Yet, we are experiencing two of the deadliest years for humanitarians and a blatant disregard of international humanitarian law across the globe with no indication of improvement. Important to note, #LocalHumanitarianActors are at greater risk than their international counterparts whereas security funding for local agencies is lower than for INGO’s. With #displacement numbers at a record high and #humanitarian crises becoming more frequent, there is no option to stop nor to slow down. Humanitarian workers will continue to deliver, provide assistance and to put themselves at risk. We at HIAS will continue to do so in partnership with the true heroes, the affected population itself – which through its resilience and strength overcomes challenge and chaos and deserves nothing less than access to aid, safety from warring parties, dignity and respect.

Today is World Humanitarian Day. Let's recognize the amazing work of humanitarian organizations and the dedicated individuals who selflessly serve humanity. The significance of this day resonates deeply with my personal values. The need to address global health challenges, fight inequality, and support those in need is one of my key drivers. World Humanitarian Day reminds us that we have the power to make a difference and uplift communities. But it isn't just about honoring frontline heroes. It's a call to action for all of us. We all have a part to play in building a more compassionate and inclusive world. https://lnkd.in/gqE5HXcA #WorldHumanitarianDay #HumanitarianHeroes #ActForHumanity

2023 was the deadliest year for humanitarian workers and 2024 is expected to be worse. We, our communities, governments and country leaders must do much more to make sure international humanitarian laws are upheld and abided to. Humanitarian workers, their centers, schools and hospitals are NOT targets in wars and should never be targeted. #worldhumanitarianday #ActForHumanity

Today, on #WorldHumanitarianDay, let's pause to honor the selfless individuals who dedicate their lives to helping others in crisis. These extraordinary humanitarians work tirelessly in the face of immense challenges, providing aid, hope, and resilience to millions worldwide. From conflict zones to disaster-stricken areas, their courage and compassion know no bounds. They are the first responders, the peacekeepers, the rebuilders. Let's express our gratitude for their unwavering commitment to humanity. But their work is far from over. The world continues to face unprecedented humanitarian crises. We must #ActForHumanity by supporting humanitarian organizations, raising awareness, and advocating for policies that protect civilians and aid workers. Together, we can create a world where everyone has the right to safety, dignity, and a chance to thrive. #humanitarian #aidworkers #globalcitizens #compassion #solidarity #humanitariancrisis #humanitarianaction

On this #WorldHumanitarianDay all I can think of is how, unless we name the perpetrators of the violence forced upon humanitarian workers' lives & communities, attacks against them/us will continue. Remember, +90% of those killed are locally hired. Just like we can't have first & second class humanitarian workers (yet we do), we can't have first & second class perpetrators (yet we do). We can't change what we don't name. Much needed words by Lina AbiRafeh: 'Now let’s talk about the elephant in the (humanitarian) room: deaths of Palestinian aid workers. For the past 10 months, time and again, activists worldwide have condemned the killing of Palestinian–and international–aid workers, journalists, doctors, and others. From October 2023 to August 2024, over 289 humanitarians, the vast majority Palestinian, were killed in Gaza by Israeli forces. 179 of them have been killed since January, putting us on track for the deadliest year for aid workers on record. This number, and the rate of state-sanctioned violence against protected civilians, is simply unheard of in modern history'.
Today is #WorldHumanitarianDay. As a former aid worker, I'm struggling with it. Yes, I'm celebrating my fellow aid workers on this Humanitarian Day (and EVERY day) and recognizing the sacrifices they make, but I'm also calling out an international system that is failing us... Our lives remain at risk. We are dying on the frontlines. And when it comes to Palestinian aid workers, their deaths seem to be overlooked, ignored, or - even worse - accepted. Enough. We say we need to protect those who work in the service of others. Do we? The theme for today is "act for humanity." Are we? Tough stuff to think about. And even harder to face as we examine our own double standards about the "costs" of violence - and who really is paying the price.
Are we “Acting for Humanity” on this World Humanitarian Day?

World Humanitarian Day: Honoring Humanitarian Service Providers and Workers in Afghanistan Today, on World Humanitarian Day, we take a moment to honor the dedicated humanitarian service providers and workers who tirelessly strive to improve the lives of those in need. In Afghanistan, their commitment and resilience are crucial as our communities face unprecedented challenges. The needs here are immense.
