🌟 I’ve been learning more about the transition challenges faced by young adults aging out of the foster care system, especially after my own experience with fostering to adopt a child at risk of aging out. One promising solution I heard about is intergenerational housing. This approach offers stable housing and a supportive community that can greatly ease the transition to independence. Older adults in these settings can provide mentorship, life skills training, and emotional support—essential tools for young adults facing the uncertainty of adulthood. Moreover, intergenerational housing fosters a sense of belonging and reduces isolation, while also offering valuable networking opportunities and access to crucial resources. As innovative ways to support those aging out of foster care are explored, intergenerational housing holds great potential to make a meaningful impact. In fifty years, the general public attitude towards people with disabilities has improved greatly from "lock them away! Institutionalize them all!" We still have a long, long way to go, but we have a reasonable start. If you feel drawn to helping disabled people live their fullest and best life, we have a number of agencies with plenty of opportunities for you. Some positions ask for in-person assistance and companionship, like the Vision Mate for the CNIB or the Leisure Pal for Community Living Trent Highlands. “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” - MLK. If you struggle to answer this question, I encourage you to consider how you can support the life of a person who literally has no one to turn to: Young people who have aged out of our foster care system typically at age 18. 20% of whom become instantly homeless, only 50% of whom “will have some form of gainful employment by age 25,” less than 3% of whom will earn a college degree at any point in their lifetime, and 70% of girls who age out of foster care will become pregnant before the age of 21. They have no one to share in their hurts or their successes. No one to call when the car breaks down and no one to rejoice with when they land the new job. No one. As we reflect on the legacy of MLK today, please consider serving as a mentor or as part of a broader support system for young people who simply need someone to walk with them through the challenges of life. At TPAS Cymru, we’re proud to empower, inform and share the voices of tenants from all backgrounds and ages. Kyle, a young tenant from Monmouthshire Housing and a regular at TPAS Cymru events, recently got in touch with us to share how his own journey in social housing has allowed him to grow and feel empowered and supported to live independently. Kyle shared: “Although houses may just look like bricks and mortar, they hold a more significant purpose to peoples lives... they are the very foundation stone of their own unique life story as people, built to last for generations in the past, currently and in the years to come! People do not change housing that much, however... housing changes people forever! And Kyle is a changed man as a result!” “As an Autistic person, I have never encountered such a moment as daunting as living on your own! The thought of taking responsibility for one’s own actions, both inside and outside of their home to determine the future of their life at first was terrifying. However, with time, I would not have it any other way as my home has become my safe space.” Kyle has been a regular attendee at TPAS Cymru events over the past few years, sharing his voice whilst also hearing the latest on insightful topics. Kyle shared; “I would say that the best part of sharing my voice and getting involved as a tenant with TPAS Cymru would be the fact that I can engage with a forum outside of my landlord. “We’re all just out here, trying to connect.” Hey I’m Crystal Renouf I am the CEO of a company called TheMothershp, we are building the first of its kind well-being artificial intelligence called Selena for children in foster care homes. She is a deeper processing model with the ability to understand the emotional needs of children. She provides oversight, insight and guidance to everyone involved. When I was 3 years old I was molested by my biological father. It challenged the way I built all of my relationships, it challenged me in how I processed everything around me, it even challenged my own self love. I came broken to a home where I needed love, reconnection and support and while I received all that love and connection from my foster mother at the time my foster father just didn’t know how to handle the situation he was handed. Don’t get me wrong he was a great father and he loves me in his own way ❤️ but I had very unhealthy attachment patterns due to my abuser….. How do you navigate these challenges in a foster care home and know what to do with a loved one who has experienced abuse such as my own? I endured many challenges in my life because I was missing this vital bond with a familiar male figure in my life. It led to paths unspoken. Selena hold the answers and the solutions to challenges just like my very own. Growing up in foster care has taught me many things it’s taught me about overcoming mental challenges that carry so much more than a physical one ever could, it’s taught me resilience, it’s taught me how to perservere through doubt and pain and it’s given me a force to do right in the world for children going through their own challenging experiences. April is stress awareness month which is important for everyone and particularly for families and children in foster care.⁠ ⁠ In our EMBRACE national survey, the average American expressed fears about caring for a child who has experienced trauma. Trauma means consistent or big stressful events that often occur over time.⁠ ⁠ Children in foster care often move from home to home, which creates trauma. Understanding the effects of trauma can help reduce toxic stress, improve relationships, and increase long term health. ⁠ ⁠ Some activities to reduce stress include exercise, meditation, going for a nature walk or spending time with family and friends.⁠ ⁠ The EMBRACE study shows that we must have more support for mentoring and adoptive families caring for Black youth in foster care.⁠ ⁠ Visit https://lnkd.in/etfZrvvj for other ways to lower stress 🩷
