The Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model (CBEM) estimates that approximately 246 thousand, or 1 in 11, children in Pennsylvania will experience the death of a parent or sibling by age 18. This is HIGHER than the national rate and the number more than DOUBLES when considering youth bereaved by age 25. This is such an important topic.
Helping bereaved children, their families and teachers process grief through group and 1-1 support. Grief | Bereavement | Support | Children Mental Health
One of the many things I don’t think I’ll ever get used to - children being bullied when they have lost someone significant. At first, I thought it was really uncommon. Now, sadly, I know better. And I wonder why this happens? Is it the child version of adults crossing the street when someone they know is bereaved? Because they just don’t know what to say, and feel so uncomfortable with someone else’s pain, that doing that seems ‘easier’? Or is it because there’s no empathy, they see someone in a vulnerable state, and just do what bullies do? Perhaps it is only once they themselves have experienced grief, that there will be some sort of understanding. Carrying so much pain already, it really is the last thing these grieving kids need. I am so glad that we have created a safe space for them, in this club where no one wants to be. But every day, I realise just how much work is still to be done.

Bereavement leave is about so much more than just planning a funeral or navigating grief. It's about keeping families stable and solvent during their most vulnerable times. From frozen bank assets to voided housing agreements, the challenges can be overwhelming. And let's not forget the cultural and religious obligations that often come with strict timelines. Without a supportive leave policy, families can face a real existential crisis. 👉 It's time for a change. Share this post and let's advocate for comprehensive bereavement leave policies. Because it's not just about grief; it's about providing the support needed to maintain life's essentials during the hardest of times. #BereavementSupport #FamilyStability #CulturalAwareness #ExistentialCrisis #AdvocateForChange #EvermoreMission

Death is a topic that many people in the UK shy away from discussing, especially when it comes to talking to children. Some families believe that shielding children from the concept of death is the best way to protect them, but in reality, this approach can leave kids unprepared for dealing with loss later in life. Avoiding discussions about death only perpetuates the fear and discomfort surrounding the topic. By normalising conversations about death and helping children understand it as a natural part of life, we can better equip them to handle grief and loss when they inevitably face it. NAFD Past-President John Adams, recently appointed Funeral Industry Advisor to Child Bereavement UK, says... “I believe schools should be required to provide age-appropriate education to help children understand death as a part of life," he says, "it's important we speak to children about death and dying before they experience a loss so they understand their choices." I couldn't agree more. As a grief specialist, I'm concerned that over a third of people aren’t comfortable bringing the subject up, and 40% don’t know their loved ones' wishes. This needs to change. It's time to break the taboo and start having open and honest conversations about death and loss with our children. Over the next week, I'll be offering a few tips to help us do that. Watch this space. #deathandchildren #talkingaboutdeath

Our Befrienders are volunteers who support grieving families. It’s one of the services we’re most proud of, but why is it such an invaluable service for people? Here are a few answers: 💛 Lived experience – they too have grieved a much-loved child 💙 Compassion – they have a desire to come alongside others facing this unique pain 💛 Tailored – we match grandparents with grandparents, siblings with siblings, etc. 💙 Companionship – no one need go through this grief alone 💛 Training – they receive comprehensive training so you’re in good hands 💙 Time – it's at least 4yrs since their bereavement so they’re further along the journey - If you would like support from a Befriender or would like to become one yourself, tap here: https://bit.ly/3qGfaOm #VolunteersWeek

Changes in Bereavement Support Payments We understand that losing a loved one can be a difficult time that comes with many pressures, including financial ones. However, you may be able to receive financial support from the government if your partner has died. Until recently, this support was only available to those who were married or in a civil partnership. However, the law changed in February 2023 allowing those who were not married or in a civil partnership, but were cohabiting parents or expecting a child, to now be eligible for Bereavement Support Payments. For more detailed information on eligibility criteria and the application process, you can visit the 'news' page on our website: https://lnkd.in/gMB_fceB #bereavement #support #lawfirm #norwich

Judi's House/JAG Institute, using the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model (CBEM), explored changes in U.S. bereavement rates due to a parent’s accidental overdose death from 2002 to 2022. For children under the age of 18, bereavement estimates increased 3.5 times. In 2002, accidental overdose deaths accounted for 6.5% of the deaths experienced by bereaved children (~15,000). In 2022, this increased to 23.4% (~81,000). To view the full report, visit https://lnkd.in/gMDKuiPJ.
