Rear Admiral Ronald Piret, Commander, U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, recently toured HII's state-of-the-art unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) engineering and production facility in Pocasset, Massachusetts. The Pocasset facility is currently manufacturing REMUS 620 UUVs for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and small UUVs for various U.S. Navy and international programs.

This #SerdpEstcpWebinar will focus on research efforts to develop protective and environmentally friendly aircraft coatings for DoD ships and aircrafts. Speakers from U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and Naval Air Warfare Center, Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) will discuss the use of organosilane polymers in topcoats and the development of aluminum-rich primers. https://bit.ly/4dB4nvt Protecting defense assets from deterioration by corrosion and wear is critical to maintaining readiness and safety, but many coatings systems have significant environmental effects. This webinar will cover alternatives that SERDP and ESTCP are funding to replace coatings that have environmental and health impacts.

Should Data-Driven AI "Pull the Strings" on the Battlefield? As artificial intelligence and autonomous systems advance, we're entering a new era of warfare where AI could potentially make life-and-death decisions on the battlefield. The rapid evolution of autonomous weapons raises profound ethical dilemmas and challenges the balance between strategic advantages and unprecedented risks. USS Delaware Pioneers UUV Deployment The Virginia-class Block III fast-attack submarine, USS Delaware (SSN-791), continues to set new benchmarks in naval warfare technology. Commissioned in April 2022 under unique circumstances, #SSN-791 was the first U.S. Naval warship to be commissioned while submerged due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, #USS Delaware will deploy a torpedo-tube launch-and-recovery (TTL&R) uncrewed underwater vehicle (#UUV) in the European theater, marking the first operational use of this capability. This milestone will see the REMUS 600, known as the "Yellow Moray," enhance mission capabilities, including the defense of critical undersea infrastructure. The REMUS 600, capable of semi-autonomous operation and deep-sea missions, signifies a leap in seabed warfare. With the ability to defend and potentially counter threats to #undersea cables and pipelines, this technology is set to redefine the #strategic landscape of underwater operations. Kudos to the innovative minds and skilled hands driving this mission forward. The silent service is making waves—literally and figuratively! #NavyInnovation #UnderwaterWarfare #USSDelaware #DefenseTech #SeabedWarfare #UUV #MilitaryInnovation https://lnkd.in/d9BuxChD

👍 Recommended reading: A review paper "War at Sea: Burn Care Challenges—Past, Present and Future" by Dr. Matthew Tadlock's team. Throughout history, seafarers have been exposed to potential thermal injuries during naval warfare; however, injury prevention, including advances in personal protective equipment, has saved lives. Thankfully, #burn injuries have decreased over time, which has resulted in a significant clinical skills gap. This paper reviews the mechanisms of thermal injury during routine naval operations and naval warfare. Lessons learned from various modern maritime mass casualty incidents are emphasized. The review article concludes with recommendations to prepare modern navies for a future war at sea. 🔗 Check the full paper: https://lnkd.in/e_DrJhBJ
