Dan Esty, Hillhouse Professor of Environmental Law and Policy at Yale University, underscores the vital role global trade can play in advancing the clean energy transition. He argues that the trade system is uniquely positioned to ensure that businesses worldwide move in unison toward a sustainable future, preventing any competitive advantage from being gained through underperformance in environmental standards. Esty’s insights reveal how the WTO, with its capacity to enforce penalty tariffs on goods not meeting agreed-upon climate standards, could become a critical mechanism in leveling the playing field. This approach ensures that companies committed to sustainability aren’t left at a disadvantage, making it possible for all to compete fairly while contributing to global climate goals. His reflections also highlight the broader challenges of maintaining political support for this transition. The risk of losing jobs to regions with lower environmental standards is real, and it threatens the political will necessary to sustain these efforts. Esty’s vision calls for a trade system that not only promotes economic efficiency but also actively supports the global community’s commitment to climate action. The emphasis on cooperation and fair play in global trade is more than just an economic strategy; it’s a crucial step toward securing a sustainable future for all. #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #GlobalTrade #Runh #RenewableEnergy #ClimateAction #DanEsty

What the Net Zero Industry Act Teaches Us About EU Industrial Policy. Nils Redeker (Jacques Delors Centre ) on three reasons why the EU remains fundamentally incapable of formulating a constructive answer to the return of industrial policy: "First, the EU lacks the analytical capacity and political will to formulate meaningful industrial policy priorities; second, it does not have the regulatory levers to support selected industries; and third it lacks the financial firepower to leverage the scale of the European market and reach its goals without hurting fair competition." 👉 https://lnkd.in/d8DfCpaW

At the recently concluded #COP28 we saw growing attention to the relevance of cooperation on trade and trade policies to the global climate agenda. As a contribution, we are pleased to share the latest article on Synergies blog on “Six Principles to Bolster Cooperation on Trade-Related Climate Measures.” The commentary draws on a recent TESS report co-authored by a group of eminent legal experts on international law related to climate and trade law, entitled “Principles of International Law Relevant for Consideration in the Design and Implementation of Trade-Related Climate Measures and Policies.” This short commentary introduces the group’s report, the principles it addresses, and the rationale for attention to principles as a foundation for dialogue and strengthened cooperation. International law-making: Actors in shipping and climate change, in Copenhagen and online, on the 27th and 28th of May 2024. The conference is organized around six thematic sessions addressing the following topics: - Science-law interface in shipping and climate change - Understanding the role of non-state actors in international law-making - Shipping and GHGs at the IMO - Shipping and GHGs at the EU - Arctic shipping regulation and climate change - Exploring interactions with other relevant legal regimes (trade, environment, human rights, finance, etc.) Michael Prehn will be presenting a paper on the adoption of the 2023 IMO strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships. This was the foreseen update of the ‘initial’ 2018 GHG Strategy adopted in April 2018. The two processes are a natural experiment where the same groupings of states decide on the same issues. I will highlight differences and similarities. Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/dA_NQH2M #marineregulations #GHG #greenshipping #maritime #SustainableShipping #BlueEconomy #GHGEmissionsReduction
