BSF in the news: "Insect protein is a key solution to a sustainable pet food industry" "On June 12, the White House introduced a plan to meet its goal of reducing food loss and waste in the U.S. by 50% by 2030. 🌎🐾 CULTIVATED MEAT FOR PET FOOD ‘SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER’ FOR THE PLANET THAN BEEF As it works to commercialise cultivated pet food, Czech biotech startup Bene Meat Technologies has revealed the environmental benefits its product offers over conventional meat. It has published the results of a life-cycle assessment (LCA) determining the climate impact of producing cultivated meat for pets. The study found that Bene Meat’s pet food generates at least 84% fewer emissions than beef – depending on how the latter is produced, the difference could be as much as 95%. It also uses between 80% and 97% less land than beef, with the potential to reduce this even further. And while these numbers were specifically calculated for pet food, the company believes its beef burgers for humans – which it unveiled last month – will perform similarly on the sustainability scale. To conduct the LCA, Bene Meat collaborated with scientists from the Czech Technical University in Prague, focusing on the industrial production of cultivated meat. The analysis was peer-reviewed by University of Nottingham professor Jon McKechnie, who specialises in cost-effective resource utilisation strategies to achieve sustainability goals. We believe that this study marks a key milestone in understanding the environmental impacts of cultivated meat, and confirms its potential as a sustainable source of protein,” said Tomáš Kubeš, head of strategic projects at Bene Meat. There’s no standalone beef industry in India. All beef comes from cows and buffaloes who are no longer considered “useful” for dairy production or their calves. The dairy industry directly fuels the cycle of slaughter, as animals are exploited for milk until their productivity declines. Once deemed unprofitable, they are sent for slaughter. If we genuinely believe that the lives of these animals matter, it’s time to confront the root cause. Choosing milk-free, plant-based alternatives is the only way to break this cycle. When we welcomed our first dog Ted into our family, I didn't expect it to change my career path.       At the time, I was working in the brilliant Food & Nutrition team and I hadn’t yet considered a move outside the category.       But after falling in love with Ted, I learned first-hand the positive difference that pets can make to our lives, whilst also learning that pets don’t always get the care they need and deserve. From this moment, I knew I wanted to work in the Petcare category – and I was fortunate enough to be at a company that could facilitate this move.     One of the best things about Mars is the variety of experiences you can have within one business – across companies, sectors and even geographies. Many of my closest friends who I joined with are now based around the world!   As for me, I may have stayed in the UK but that hasn’t meant a lack of variety. I’ve worked across our business segments in marketing, sales, commercial strategy and supply chain roles to name but a few.   I am incredibly grateful for these opportunities, which I know also appeal to the next generation of talent who are seeking new experiences and challenges faster than ever before.   But whilst so much about each business is unique (as I know having worked at Mars Food, Pet Nutrition and now at Royal Canin), they all have the Mars DNA too – which means:        📈 Ambitious targets for sustained growth taken with care for the effects of our business on all stakeholders in mind. 🧠 The prioritisation on personal development, leading to impressive employee retention. 🗣️ An emphasis on family and community, enabled by an environment where Associates are empowered to share what they need to succeed.   I can’t imagine there are many other places where you can find such a range of opportunities linked by the same shared purpose – which is just one of the reasons I am #ProudlyMars.
