Nominees for the 28th annual Webby Awards were announced last week, and my podcast, Culture Jumpers, earned a nomination for best DEI podcast for our season one episode, "BIPOC Gamers, Animal Crossing, and the Mellowverse." First of all, that's just ... whew! I never imagined I'd be a Webby nominee. Secondly, I'm so grateful to the Webby folks for considering us among the ranks of shows put out by giants like SiriusXM and America's Test Kitchen. The odds are long that we'll win, but the fact that a tiny, DIY podcast created entirely by two people even made it this far just goes to show that hard work and passion go a long way. Lastly, win or lose, the award isn't the point. The main reasons Lionel and I started out on this journey were that we wanted to do something creative together, and we wanted to give a voice to stories and people that don't always get space in the wider media landscape. So, while we'd be doing this with or without the awards, it is nice to feel validated that our work matters. Okay, shameless plug time. There's a "People's Voice" vote in addition to the panel category ... if you're so inclined, please hop over and vote for Culture Jumpers. Polls are open until April 18th. :) https://lnkd.in/er7vmaQc

NEW pod: Last night I watched the results from the Iowa caucus roll in from a cigar bar on Main Street in Nashua, New Hampshire where the voters could care less about the race and instead watched the NFL Finals. Almost every one of the dozen men at the appropriately named "Castro's Back Room" are voting for Trump. One guy said he's voting for Haley because he's worried Trump won't be able to win the general election if convicted. Yes, Trump romped in Iowa winning over 50 percentage points, while Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley trailed behind by 30 points. But where I am in New Hampshire, there is expected to be much more interesting race next week because Haley is coming within striking distance of Trump in some polls. But Vivek Ramaswamy's drop out may have changed those dynamics -- giving Trump the boost he needs to again have a resounding victory. Since it's looking pretty clear that Trump will be the GOP nominee, what do the results in Iowa say about the final rematch with Joe Biden? Well, Trump actually performed better with women and educated voters in the wealthier suburbs of Iowa than he did in 2016. These same counties went to Marco Rubio, but did not go to Nikki Haley. These are the same type of voters that Biden needs to decisively win over in the seven battleground states to beat Trump. To me, it shows that Trump fatigue may not be as strong as Democrats suggest. #politics #2024election #trump2024 #newhampshire #iowa #politicsnews #biden https://lnkd.in/eV3SSA99

- I Decentralize Everything - I invest in Web 3.0 - I focus on APAC, Africa, LATAM - I love people and use things, not the other way around -
Happy Friday and welcome to Satoshi Archives, episode 2. As promised this week's "Discussions with Denys" will be about how we self-organize and have our voices heard (i.e vote). Most people stop voting because of lack of transparency and fairness. But IMO voter attrition is rooted in economic structures, not voter fatigue. Let me explain: Fundamentally there is a constant tension between profit (income from labor using capital) and rent (income from owning something rather than utilizing it). Capitalists usually don't like to pay rent, and rentiers (people who earn their living off rents) want capitalists to pay them as much as possible. This struggle between profit from working and profit from owning is not new. However tech rentiers like Apple, Google and Amazon are FORCING us to pay them, something new that Yanis Varoufakis calls Techno-feudalism. https://lnkd.in/esppe34N They have succeeded doing so by regulatory capture that has produced laws that allow them to control competitors AND customers. This is why voting is so important. To curb regulatory capture. Rentiers try to push capitalists into serfdom, bound to the platform they own, to work it and produce the rents they depend on for generations to come. Learn how to decentralize voting, avoid regulatory capture and make sure your voice is heard. Enjoy the episode.
