What’s the best part about working at Rival? 🤔 ↳This might sound like a cop-out answer because I feel like it's what most people would say, but I’d have to go with my colleagues at Rival. They are not only smart, each bringing something unique to the table, but they are also extremely kind. They are all passionate about what they do, and everyone is more than willing to help!   How did you find your first few months with the company?  ↳ I started during the pandemic, so everything was virtual. It wasn’t until 6-7 months into the job that I met anyone in person. Since we hadn’t met face-to-face, we used to play a game where we would guess each other’s height. It turned out I was the shortest on the team, even though I have a pretty average height. This is just a company full of really tall people haha.   If you have only one word to describe Rival, what would it be?  ↳ Tall… (yes, I’m bitter …). Rival takes a ‘we’ approach to business, which creates a collaborative and fun environment. I’ve experienced this firsthand in my interactions with both my team and clients. And as they say… nothing beats the people you work with!   ↳ What surprised you most about working at Rival Technologies?   Honestly, I’ve been most surprised by how well Rival has curated a strong company culture, even with most of us working remotely. I didn’t expect to feel so connected to everyone. You can tell it’s a big priority to keep us all engaged and on the same page, no matter where we are.   ↳ How did you find your first few months with the company?   My first few months were a whirlwind—in the best way possible. It was fast-paced, and I was constantly being challenged, which kept things exciting. The team’s trust in one another really stands out; everyone shares responsibility and is open about their wins and struggles. Was great to spend a few hours talking to a cool and diverse bunch of NextWork ers last night, talking about learning software skills and then how to go and use them to get a job! I hope it was useful for the team, I think Amber and the Nextwork team are doing great work - building both a platform for learning as well as a community to support that process. It’s easy to start learning online. It’s much harder to stick to your goals that you have when you start, especially when you’re also juggling studies or part time work or parenting or all of those things together! The community aspect of what you’re doing is awesome, all the NWers spoke highly of the great work that Emelie Verseput is doing in order to provide that personal support. Was great to see and hear what people like Alice kim was doing building her ‘brag book’ of sites she’s building in React and how she might use AWS Textract for her next project :) or Joseph Johnson moving from intern to perm managing Azure infra. Or Akiko I. with her Salesforce learning. Or Joseph Chang and his work at Mission Ready. Or Chris Kyle and how he’s still cheffing around Auckland while he also upskills in technology. And other cool stories too! Great work team, learning and jobs are hard right now but sticking to your goals with support from your peers and your learning platform is key!

Yesterday, Maddy Lorena D’ Silvestri Ruiz, the HRBP at DevSavant, and I were chatting about how retention is this big deal for HR teams. But, like, why are we so hung up on keeping people around forever? Why do we want companies to think of employees like they're in it for the long haul? At DevSavant, we get the whole job market vibe, especially with tech recruiters bombarding devs and tech talent with tempting offers all the time. We hire the best talent, give them top-notch training to level up their technical skills and power skills, and get it when they're ready for a new challenge in their careers and personal lives. Sure, people come and go at DevSavant, but guess what? Some come back. Like Mariana Bedoya, who left us in September 2022 and then strutted back as our new People & Culture Generalist working with Maddy Lorena D’ Silvestri Ruiz. Welcome back this awesome and smart pro. Coming back with more 'everydays' at #teamwestwing 👇 In software engineering it's often a big flex to say 'we do DDD' or event storming. Often after 'we are hiring', etc. And that's fine! I sometimes do that too! But... In fact, at least in my eyes, the most beneficial (and most challenging) part is about transplanting this 'event-driven' mindset to - exactly - all those little things you do #everyday. The image from my post is a shot of a document that I prepare for business team. It depicts findings after investigating the system we want to adapt. You can see events and policies that are in place now. Said document intends to prompt stakeholders to think of policies that will in turn mitigate risks coming from current system behaviour. I hope it will be easy to read, so that our biz folks can fill it with their expectations.
