The recent closure of maternity wards in communities like Smithtown, NY—a suburb with a high median income—underscores a growing crisis that is not confined to rural areas. Dr. Dr. Ndidiamaka A., founder of the Center for Black Maternal Health and Reproductive Justice at Tufts University, highlights the gravity of this issue: "Limiting access to care and pushing people further out of their home communities are direct contributors to maternal morbidity. It’s that simple." These closures, driven by high costs and staffing shortages, are disproportionately affecting Black communities and exacerbating existing health disparities. At TUSM, Dr. Amutah-Onukagha and her amazing team are leading crucial efforts to bring this conversation to the forefront and advocate for systemic changes that will protect maternal health and ensure equitable access to care for all. Now more than ever, we and everyone who are building the future of healthcare must work together to address these challenges and safeguard the future of maternal care in America. Calculating your age is a simple process that involves knowing your date of birth and the current date. Knowing your precise age can be important for legal and medical reasons. To determine your age, you first need to know the month, day and year of your birth. This information is typically found on government-issued identification documents like a driver's license, passport or birth certificate. Be sure to use your date of birth exactly as written on your official ID document. Once you have confirmed your date of birth, write down today's full date, including the month, day and year. Then count the number of fully elapsed years between your birthdate and today's date. For example, if your date of birth is January 15, 1990 and today's date is May 27, 2022, here are the step-by-step calculations: Your date of birth: January 15, 1990 Today's date: May 27, 2022 Subtract the birth year (1990) from the current year ( - ds7skmpsot - https://lnkd.in/eJfEF-iM

Black Maternal Health Week, April 11 – 17, 2024, is an opportunity to raise awareness and take action to improve the health of Black mothers. Studies show that when Black women suffer from severe injuries or pregnancy complications or simply ask for assistance, they are often dismissed or ignored in the healthcare settings that are supposed to care for them. By recognizing and addressing these disparities, we can work towards creating a more equitable and inclusive healthcare environment for all individuals. During Black Maternal Health Week and beyond, it is crucial for communities, healthcare providers, and policymakers to come together to advocate for better care and outcomes for Black mothers. Together, we can strive to make a positive impact and improve the well-being of Black mothers and their families.

Talk about cruel and unusual: in the past two years, New York has revoked paid leave out of the hands of at least 1,200 mothers only days after birthing and burying a child. We’ve been leading a battalion of concerned stillbirth parents and allies fighting to rectify this dangerous gap in New York’s Paid Family Leave (PFL) law since May 2022. But another legislative session is set to close in days, and still nothing has been done. Imagine counting down to the due date of a healthy pregnancy, only to learn your full-term baby has died - and you still have to give birth. As two mothers who have experienced this firsthand, we can tell you it’s a torment we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemies. And yet an average of 1,400 NY families have suffered the same for each of the past five years. NY’s blatant cruelty to these families has been shameless. Imagine returning home to a fully decorated nursery only to plan a funeral, still bleeding, leaking milk from engorged breasts which don’t realize there is no baby to feed, and getting this call from NY State: “Since you don’t have a baby to bond with, you no longer qualify for $1,100/week of Paid Family Leave. But don’t worry, instead you can take Temporary Disability at $170/week. And your husband, who did not give birth, still qualifies for his PFL to care for you postpartum.” Continue reading on Medium... A new law makes Florida the first state to let pregnant women receive C-sections outside of hospitals. It’s a fraught solution to improving access to maternity care in the state — and a rule change that could put women’s lives on the line. Like many other states, Florida needs to find creative solutions to the dearth of health care options for pregnant women. About 20% of Florida counties are considered a maternity desert and several other counties have low access to care. But there's a host of reasons why this approach isn't the right one. For starters, C-sections are associated with a higher risk of complications that include heavy bleeding, blood clots and infections. Yet the law doesn’t require these birthing centers to be near enough to a hospital equipped to deal with a serious problem. And this bill was pushed by a private equity physician group --given PE's track record in health care, that should give Floridians pause. Read more in my latest Bloomberg Opinion column:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE = May 21, 2024 / The Verdict Is In: Trump Had An Awful 24 Hours / The Evidence: Nazi Imagery, Banning Birth Control, Canceled Trips. Donald Trump was supposed to be in Arizona today – then he canceled, for the THIRD time. From there, Trump’s day only got worse. In the latest in his long history of antisemitic behavior, hanging out with antisemites, and attacking Jewish Americans, Trump posted a campaign video that echoed Nazi language. New analysis found Trump's economic agenda will increase costs on Americans by $500 billion or at least $1,700 a year for middle-class families. Not to be outdone, he went on Pittsburgh TV to float restrictions on birth control. And, Trump promised to rip away the constitutional right of birthright citizenship on Nevada TV. Tonight all three network broadcast evening news programs covered Trump using Nazi rhetoric and imagery, meaning the combined audience of over 20 million people were reminded exactly who Donald Trump is. The evidence is clear – Donald Trump had a terrible 24 hours. The following is a statement from Biden-Harris 2024 Spokesperson Ammar Moussa: “Posting Nazi imagery and promising to rip away more freedoms from women is not what we would call a winning campaign strategy. Every day, Donald Trump reminds voters just how extreme and dangerous Donald Trump is – and this is why the American people must ensure he is nowhere near the Oval Office ever again.” ###
