Places for People has been addressing housing affordability in Haliburton County, ON since 2007. One of the 14 finalists in round 2 of the Housing Supply Challenge—a competition designed to address barriers to new housing supply—Tapestry is a non-profit that empowers organizations to raise funds. Working in partnership with Tapestry, Places for People leveraged their expertise to raise $850,000 in community bonds in record time - less than 3 months! This achievement, backed by over 80% local investors, positions the organization to create more affordable housing within the county. "During the pandemic, the rise in remote work created an influx of residents from large urban centres keen to take advantage of Haliburton County’s housing prices, which are still lower than in places like Toronto. The economic gap between the year-round residents and the seasonal visitors increased and with it, the area’s affordable housing challenges. The role of Places for People was becoming increasingly important. Still, creating more affordable housing projects would require larger sums of money. Enter Tapestry Community Capital." HomeAid Austin currently has 12 varying projects in our pipeline, 4 of which are in need of a Builder Captain!!!👷🔨 HomeAid builds and maintains housing and programmatic facilities for local nonprofit organizations serving those experiencing or at risk of homelessness by leveraging our relationships within the building industry to garner in-kind donations of labor and materials. Being a Build Captain with HomeAid Austin means managing the construction or renovation of the housing project and securing trade donors such as carpenters, plumbers, insulators, and roofers, to provide labor, materials, and other services. Vendors are also an important part of our projects as they can donate and offer discounted appliances and other materials. Historically, HomeAid provides an average savings of 50% of the total cost of the construction project through in-kind donations of services and materials! A lesson we can learn from our Northern neighbors. In an effort to combat the affordable housing crisis exacerbated by high rents, non-profits in Ontario, including Places for People in Haliburton County, are adopting a new financing method: community bonds. This approach allows these organizations to raise capital directly from local residents instead of traditional banks by selling interest-bearing loans aimed at funding specific projects. NEWS Release: TRINITY DEVELOPMENT ALLIANCE, INC., EXPANDS UNIQUE AFFORDABLE HOUSING OUTREACH PROGRAM FOR U.S. RURAL COMMUNITIES Trinity Development Alliance, Inc. (TDA) has expanded its unique affordable housing outreach program that benefits U.S. rural communities. After successfully developing, launching and implementing their Affordable Fair Housing Marketing Plan (AFHMP) service, the nonprofit has been able to reach rural individuals, families and communities in need of affordable housing, while also creating positive outcomes and budget friendly solutions for affordable housing properties and their owners.
