We are now half-way through our four-year #CISTEMEEC regional project to develop “industrial value chains, the energy transition, electric mobility and the circular economy”. Our objective is to expand, in Wallonia, three industrial sectors supported by the growth of the electric mobility and energy transition sectors: 1) The recycling of Li-ion batteries, 2) Copper and 3) Rare-Earth Elements (REE) in permanent magnets. We are well on our way and look forward to upscaling the innovations and technological breakthroughs related to these key value chains. While this may sound ambitious, it rests on a simple principle, as elegantly coined by Fanny Lambert, head of the hydrometallurgy research unit at the GeMMe laboratory, “CISTEMEEC is the circular economy of electric mobility products”. All alternative mobilities are on the rise, from BEV to HEV and PHEV. However, given that such passenger vehicles (the “heavy” electric mobility) are unlikely to reach recycling centres in significant volumes in the short term, we also focus on “light” electric mobility, with electric bicycles and scooters, which currently have a shorter lifespan. The recent approval of the Critical Raw Materials Act (#CRMA) at the EU level coincides with the mid-point for CISTEMEEC. In addition to an updated list of Critical Raw Materials (CRM), the CRMA identifies a list of Strategic Raw Materials (SRM), which are crucial to technologies important to Europe's green and digital ambitions. REE have been on all EU CRM lists since 2011. Lithium cobalt and manganese, ubiquitous elements in Li-ion batteries, are all on the CRM list. Moreover, copper has now been included on the CRM list as an SRM and, as such, is now covered by the CRMA. CISTEMEEC is therefore perfectly aligned with the CRMA regulation and will aim to contribute towards the benchmark of at least 25% of the EU's annual consumption in CRMs issued from recycling activities. Find out all about our latest CISTEMEEC developments on : https://lnkd.in/eKucZeBM CRM Group - CTP (Centre Terre et Pierre asbl) - Groupe Comet - Cilyx - HYDROMETAL - John Cockerill - Sagacify - GREEnMat (ULiege) - Urban and Environmental Engineering (UEE) - Université de Liège - PEPs ULiège #reversemetallurgy #criticalrawmaterialsact #rawmaterials #electricmobility #LiionBatteries

𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙈𝙤𝙧𝙚; 𝑫𝒐𝒘𝒏𝒍𝒐𝒂𝒅 𝑷𝑫𝑭 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒄𝒉𝒖𝒓𝒆: https://lnkd.in/du8nfQDn Biocomposites are materials made from natural fibers combined with biodegradable matrices, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional composites. These materials integrate plant-based fibers such as flax, hemp, or jute with biodegradable resins, which can include polymers derived from renewable sources. The key advantage of biocomposites lies in their reduced environmental impact compared to synthetic composites, as they help lower carbon footprints and utilize renewable resources. "The global biocomposites industry size is projected to reach USD 51.2 billion by 2026, registering a CAGR of 16.0%" In the automotive and aerospace industries, biocomposites are gaining traction due to their lightweight and high-strength properties. By replacing conventional materials with biocomposites, manufacturers can improve fuel efficiency and reduce overall environmental impact. For example, biocomposite panels are used in vehicle interiors and structural components, providing both performance and sustainability benefits. The use of biocomposites extends to consumer products and construction materials, where they contribute to eco-friendly building practices and durable goods. Their versatility and sustainable nature align with the increasing demand for green technologies and responsible manufacturing, showcasing the potential of biocomposites in advancing environmental stewardship and innovation across various sectors.
